Nottingham 6 Red Super League: Daddies tame the Titans

NOTTINGHAM 6 RED SUPER LEAGUE

MATCHES PLAYED 23 JUNE 2009

DIVISION 1

Sherwood Daddies came out on top with a 4-3 defeat of Beeston Titans. Clint I'Anson, who has been struggling with his form this season, came up against last minute replacement and three times Notts Amateur Champion Bash Maqsood. In the first frame I'Anson never really got going and Maqsood won the frame quite easily. In the second frame Maqsood left I'Anson a half chance with a long red which rattled in the jaws of the pocket and left Maqsood in to make a cracking clearance of 56. Next game up was Lee Crombie vs Neil Jones and the Titans man got off to a great start and finished the game out with a 30 break. The second frame was a bit of safety exchange between both players until Jones managed to catch the middle knuckle with the white which sent it back down towards the group of reds. Crombie did not waste any time and knocked in a superb 53 break with the blue, pink and black still left on the table. In the final game Wayne Bilbie took on Ant McMahon. The Titans’ in-form player started the better of the two in the first frame and took it by 20+ points. In the second frame Bilbie played a loose safety shot and went in-off in the middle pocket. McMahon then stepped up and made a great break of 53 which would have been 60 had the black not rattled in the jaws.

BCI Giants were thankful for their first break point of the season which gave them a 4-3 win against Arnold Aces. John Fountain got off to a good start against Jonathan Mason but it was the Giants player who converted some good long pots to clear up with a break of 26. Frame two was more open with both players having chances but Fountain displayed great skill to take it for the Aces. The second game between James Booth and Neil Elliott was an explosive one with both players choosing an attacking style. Elliott got off to a better start opening up a good lead but Booth came back well with some great potting. Elliott just needed the brown but he missed and it was Booth who finished well to take the first frame. Booth got off to the better start in frame two but it was Elliott with some fantastic potting who took it to level the match at 2-2. The final game was between James Notman and Kwok Yip and it was the Giants captain who made the better start with some clean crisp long potting. Notman came back into the game well with some good potting of his own and he went on to take the frame to put the Aces 3-2 ahead. Yip was very quick off the mark in the final frame but Notman responded well with some great potting, setting himself up with a chance to win but he missed the brown and Yip pinched it. Mason’s run of 26 gave the Giants that all important break point.

Pegasus Predators narrowed the gap at the top of the division with a fine 5-2 away victory at Beeston Vikings. Danny Castel-Nuovo won a scrappy opening frame for the Predators before Shane Kidd got the Vikings back in the match with an excellent 33 break which secured the break point. From then on in it was all one way traffic with Zeb Ahmed in good touch on his debut for the Predators easing to a 2-0 win over Chris Hodgkinson. Nav Hussain then secured the victory with an excellent 2-0 defeat of Tom Walters.

DIVISION 2

BCI Breakers had a very impressive 7-0 win against Phoenix Falcons. Sean Croft beat Ash Goring 2-0, Shaun Parkinson beat Gary Birks 2-0 and Jordan Parnham beat Stephen Lally 2-0. Parkinson secured the break point for the Breakers with a fine run of 27.

Beeston Warriors kept up their terrific away form with a 5-2 victory over Oakleigh Miss Fits. Chung Cheung drew 1-1 with Steve Roe and Shaun Harlow also drew 1-1 with Rob Selby. Lee Harlow then inflicted a rare 2-0 defeat on Spider. Shaun Harlow took the break point for the Warriors with a knock of 19.

Pegasus Colts defeated Oakleigh Daft Lads 5-2 and it was Steve Booth who shone yet again for the Colts with a 2-0 defeat of Adam Robinson including a run of 28 which also secured the break point for his team. Eric Towle and Daniel Norton both drew 1-1 against Ryan Cooper and Colin Tutin respectively.

Stadium Steelers maintained the pressure on the top two with a fine 4-3 victory against top-of-the-table BCI Braves. Matt Ellis lost the first frame against Dave Salmon, the Braves player having a run of 22 which secured the break point. Ellis got his own back in the second to level the match with a nice 16 break. Ross Wilkin was very lucky to take the first frame against Mick Salmon who made some unexpected errors to gift the frame to the Steelers player. Wilkin relaxed in the second frame and made some good pots to take the frame. In the final game Toby Irons made some great long pots to take the first frame against Dave Buckley, but the Steelers player stretched out a nice lead in the final frame, which despite some great safety from Irons, was enough to win it comfortably.

Steve Capsey (Junior) got the point for the 'C' team, but could only beat Paul Bell 66-63, thus giving the extra point to the 'E' team. Ruddington CC move up to second place moving above their opponents City Hospital LC. Chris Clark's new cue was in sparkling form for City Hospital winning the first frame 71-16 against Morris Hudspeth. It was all Ruddington from then on. Nottingham 6 Red Super League: Titans go clear of Sharks

NOTTINGHAM 6 RED SUPER LEAGUE

MATCHES PLAYED 16 JUNE 2009

DIVISION 1

Beeston Titans went four points clear of Stadium Sharks at the top of division one thanks to a 5-2 win against joint bottom Arnold Aces. James Booth got the Aces off to a flyer with an excellent 2-0 victory over Clint I'Anson. Neil Jones then levelled the match with a 2-0 win against Aces captain James Notman. The impressive Ant McMahon, who hasn't dropped a frame since the opening day, defeated Kirk Wesselby 2-0 in the final game, also securing the all important break point with a run of 31.

Stadium Sharks narrowly defeated Pegasus Predators 4-3 in a closely fought match that saw Nav Hussain capture the break point for the Predators with a clearance of 35. Hussain's break came in the opening frame of his game against Barry Stark. Hussain was potting everything in sight and he hammered Stark 61-0. The Sharks player, who was standing in for the absent Bob Walker, then hit back in style, levelling the match with a 40-17 victory. Daniel Di Folco put the Sharks ahead with a 35-25 win against Danny Castel-Nuovo but the Predators man levelled the match again with a 31-23 win in the second frame. Neither Steve Butler or Mike Langdon had been playing well recently so it was anybody's guess who would come out on top in the final game of the match. The first frame was a tactical battle but Butler finished the frame strongly, taking it 41-14 to put the Sharks 3-2 ahead. With little prospect of Butler beating Hussain's 35 break the match was effectively 3-3 going into the crucial final frame. Butler found himself 24 points ahead after making breaks of 13 and 15. He gave Langdon few chances but it was the Predators captain's bad luck that led to him losing the frame. Langdon had a good chance to clear the colours but in potting the brown he stunned the white into the middle bag, leaving Butler an easy pot on the brown from the D which put him 19 ahead with 18 remaining. Langdon potted the blue but then went in-off the pink into the same middle bag and Butler dispatched the pink to win the match for the Sharks.

DIVISION 2

BCI Braves came out on top in the local derby with BCI Breakers. The Braves won 5-2 but the match was much closer than the score line suggests with most frames going down to the wire. Dave Salmon secured three points for the Braves by beating Shaun Parkinson 2-0 and making the highest break of 17. Mick Salmon drew 1-1 with Jordan Parnham and Toby Irons also drew 1-1 with Sean Croft.

Oakleigh Miss Fits had a terrific 5-2 win against Pegasus Colts. Steve Roe defeated Scott Bates 2-0 with frame scores of 31-18 and 36-24. Rob Selby lost his first frame against Danny Knowles 15-45 but he made up for it in the second with a 42-9 win. Spider comprehensively defeated Eric Towle 2-0 with frame scores of 40-27 and 49-8 but Towle secured the break point for the Colts with a run of 18.

Stadium Steelers ran out comfortable 6-1 winners against Oakleigh Daft Lads and but for an in-off on the final black in the final frame they would have completed a whitewash. Dave Buckley, standing in for Ross Wilkin, got the Steelers off to a good start with some solid potting against Colin Tutin to take the first frame. Buckley then sneaked a very close second frame to put the Steelers 2-0 up. Ryan Cooper then had some awful luck against Pete Gormley, who is the Steelers’ in-form player, as Gormley won both frames to put the Steelers 4-0 ahead. In the final game, Matt Ellis secured the break point for the Steelers with a run of 15. His opponent Adam Robinson left him a simple pink in the first frame which he duly dispatched to make it 6-0. Ellis slipped up in the final frame, missing a few crucial pots and Robinson took advantage to go ahead. Ellis needed blue, pink and black to win and he potted blue and pink to take it to the black ball. Robinson then left the black near the middle pocket and Ellis had a simple straight shot for 7-0 but he potted the black and then watched agonisingly the white followed it in, handing the frame to Robinson.

Phoenix Falcons went down 2-5 at home to Beeston Warriors. Things started ok for the Falcons as Joe Trout drew 1-1 with Lee Harlow and Dave Allsopp drew 1-1 with Shaun Harlow. The Warriors then took all of the remaining points on offer thanks to Andy Hopcroft who defeated Stephen Lally 2-0 and secured the break point with a fine knock of 25.

Titans crush Bandits in quality clash

NOTTINGHAM 6 RED SUPER LEAGUE

MATCHES PLAYED 9 JUNE 2009

DIVISION 1

Beeston Titans crushed the BCI Bandits on their home tables with an emphatic 5 - 2 victory. Clint I'Anson got the Titans off to a good start by winning the first frame against Jason Bettridge. Bettridge then hit back with a quality 51 break, missing a testing pink into the corner pocket. Wayne Martin continued his disastrous start to the 6 red league by losing two very long frames against Ant McMahon. The Titans player had most of the running but deservedly won this mammoth encounter that lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes. Neil Jones also had some good fortune in his match against Tony Collins but he still comprehensively defeated the Bandits player, making breaks of 34 and 40 along the way.

Stadium Sharks fought back from 2-0 down to beat Beeston Vikings 4-3 at Beeston Snooker Hall. Tom Walters blew Bob Walker away in the first frame. Walters made a 20 break on the way to a 60-7 win. The second frame was much closer and Walker had chances to win the frame but Walters won the game 2-0 with a 44-37 victory. The second game between Shane Kidd and Daniel Di Folco was very one sided as Kidd only scored 16 points over both frames. Di Folco was on fire, having a run of 28 - the highest of the match - on the way to a 53-15 win in the first frame. Di Folco then romped away with the second frame as Kidd was forced to concede with the Sharks player 40-1 ahead. The first frame between Chris Hodgkinson and Steve Butler was a low scoring affair, Hodgkinson eventually victorious 26-16. The final frame was almost as bad but Butler played a little better after a good start by Hodgkinson and it was Butler who took the frame and match for the Sharks, with a 30-21 win.

Pegasus Predators secured their second 6 red super league win of the season with an excellent 5-2 victory over the BCI Giants. Nav Hussain knocked in the evening’s highest break, a superb 48, as he bagged a maximum 3 points for the first time this season to see the Predators home against Kwok Yip in the final match. In the opening match Jonathan Mason made a good 32 break to secure the opening frame before Danny Castel-Nuovo hit back in the next for the Predators. The Giants’ Neil Elliott got off to a good start winning the opening frame comfortably to condemn Mike Langdon to his sixth straight frame loss but an anxious Langdon finally ended his miserable run by sinking a tricky blue to take a share of the spoils.

DIVISION 2

Top of the table BCI Braves maintained their impressive start to the season with an excellent 6-1 victory away at Beeston Warriors. Steve Cheung went down 2-0 to Dave Salmon. Salmon won the first frame 53-11 and the second 37-17, also making the match's highest break of 18 in the process. Shaun Harlow won the first frame of his game against Mick Salmon 38-29, but Salmon took the second 38-26 to put the Braves 3-1 ahead. Toby Irons was victorious in the first frame against Lee Harlow. Irons had a break of 16 on route to a 35-13 win. He then won a one-sided final frame 33-1 to give the Braves a 6-1 win.

Pegasus Colts had a good 5-2 away win against Stadium Steelers. Pete Gormley and Eric Towle kicked off with an even handed match, each taking a frame. Matt Ellis struggled to get going after two weeks away from snooker and was beaten 2-0 by some solid potting from Scott Bates including the match’s highest break of 15. Ross Wilkin made some good long pots to take the first frame and felt comfortable in the second with Danny Knowles feeling nervy, but this didn’t stop Knowles clearing the colours to tie the frame then making sure of a re-spotted black after Wilkin made a hash of his safety shot.

BCI breakers won 5-2 against Oakleigh Daft Lads, however the Daft Lads will be pleased to win a couple of frames after their poor start to the season. Honours were even between Shaun Parkinson and Ryan Cooper. Jordan Parnham and Adam Robinson also shared the spoils to leave the match all square at 2-2 going into the final game between debutant Connor Kelliher and Colin Tutin. Tutin is yet to win a frame this season and unfortunately for him things didn’t change as he came up against an in-form Kelliher who knocked in the match’s highest break of 18 on the way to a 2-0 win.

Oakleigh Miss Fits had an excellent 5-2 home win against the much fancied Phoenix Falcons. Young Ryan Baker got the Falcons off to a good start winning the first frame against J Vernon 58-8 but Vernon took the next 23-17 to level the match. After that it was all Miss Fits as Rob Selby beat Steve Howard 2-0 and Spider beat Ant Adkin-Walker 2-0. Howard secured the break point for the Falcons with a run of 15.

Nick Kirk man however lost the first frame to Ant Gilman by 51-47. Morris Hudspeth, with the aid of a 35 break, pulled a frame back for Ruddington winning 74-48 against M. McMillan. Rob Ryan then put Spot On ahead with a 52-27 win over David Griffiths. Dennis Dyer took the points and the win point for Ruddington by winning 89-9 over A. O'Neill.

DIVISION 2

BCI 'D' had a convincing 4-1 away win at Nottingham Forest SSC which leaves them leading the division by a point. Sherwood SC 'D' are second in the table after a 2-2 draw at Mapperley CC. With the frames scores level and the points score level neither team knew how to get the extra match win point. The last two players to finish their frame should have played a re-spotted black ball to decide the match. This leaves Mapperley CC in third spot. Phoenix Cue Sports move to joint fourth after a 3-2 win away at Masters SC. The first frame was a re-spot black after Nick Oakley took the last 2 balls and the won 53-46 with the re-spot over substitute Al. James Robinson for Masters was in top form winning 46-39 against Steve Howard. Bob Wright was no match for Gary Birks after Birks had a 35 break in taking the frame 78-23, and Phoenix 2-1 up. Paul Bell for Masters SC was always in front against R. Giddens winning 56-26. Both teams are joint fourth although Phoenix have played a game less. Nottingham Forest are bottom of the table, but have a game in hand over most of the other teams.

Classy Hussain cannot prevent defeat

NOTTINGHAM 6 RED SUPER LEAGUE

MATCHES PLAYED 2 JUNE 2009

DIVISION 1

A classy 38 break by Nav Hussain restored some pride for the Pegasus Predators as they went down 4-3 away to local rivals, the Arnold Aces. Hussain secured the bonus break point in a final frame win against James Booth who had won the opening frame with some solid potting to put the Aces in a commanding 4-1 lead. In the opening two matches, Darren Butcher got the Aces off to a great start with a 2-0 win over Mike Langdon which included an excellent 30 break whilst Jamie Mathers and James Notman finished all square.

DIVISION 2

Beeston Warriors moved into second place in the division one with an excellent 5-2 win over Pegasus Colts. Game one was between Steve Cheung and Eric Towle and frame one started off with some safety exchanges. Cheung knocked in a 16 break to take the lead early on and he remained in front until Towle found himself requiring a snooker on the colours. Towle never gave up and eventually managed to get the snooker he needed and got himself back in the frame, but unfortunately he snookered himself on the blue after potting the Brown. Cheung took advantage of Towle's mistake and potted the remaining 3 colours for a break of 18. The second frame was a scrappy one with both players missing chances. The frame was close throughout with Towle leading all the way through to a black ball finish. Young Towle was left with an easy frame clincher after Cheung over-cut a thin shot which left the black ball hanging on the edge of the pocket. Game two saw Shaun Harlow take on Chris Mathers and Harlow took an early lead in the first frame with breaks of 12 and 11. Mathers was unable to get into the frame and Harlow played well as he ended the frame with another 12 break. The second frame was another scrappy affair and neither player was able to take advantage of the chances they had. Mathers had a clear lead after a couple of fouls from Harlow and with the Warriors player needing snookers with the pink and black left, he conceded the frame. Lee Harlow played Barrie Towle in game three and in the first frame Harlow took a commanding lead with a steady 22 break. Towle, who was playing his first ever league match, was unable to get himself onto the score board and needed snookers on the colours. Going into the final frame, The Colts found themselves needing Towle to win the last frame and beating the high break of 22, set by Lee Harlow in the previous frame. Once again, a scrappy second frame in which the first 5 reds were potted without either player getting a colour after the red. Harlow potted the final red followed by the black, along with yellow, green and brown to ensure the Warriors secured the point for the highest break and also the frame.

Jason Stockton wins Eastwood Handicap

Eastwood Handicap Snooker Tournament – 31 May 2009

Despite the very hot bbq weather, a good field of thirteen players turned up to compete in the Eastwood Handicap on Sunday 31st May 2009. The popular round robin format was used again which provided every competitor with at least three matches. The top two players in the four man groups and the top three in the five man group automatically progressed to the quarter-finals. The third placed finishers in the four man groups had a play-off to decide who would progress.

Group A

Group A was won by Steve Butler whose only defeat came at the hands of James Robinson but the fight for qualification was very tight. In the end both Bob Wright and Andrew Foster progressed to the quarter-finals, not just because of their superior number of frames won, but also because Wright and Foster both beat Robinson. Thus both James Robinson and Steve Coleman missed out on qualification.

Group B

Jimmy Gratton was not his usual self, possibly due to him spending the night away from home and only getting a few hours sleep. As a result he lost all three of his matches and failed to win a frame. Danny Castel-Nuovo won the group with Zeb Ahmed finishing second. Stephen Lally was forced to rely on a play-off against the third placed finisher in group C to try and grab a quarter-final spot.

Group C

Wayne Martin has won all six Eastwood tournaments to date and he was again looking good as he won all three matches to top the group. Stoke-on-Trent’s Jason Stockton finished second and Nav Hussain finished third. Debutant Alex Smith from Ilkeston came close to winning a few frames but was left propping up the table with no wins.

Play-off

The play-off for the final quarter-final spot saw Stephen Lally take on Nav Hussain. It was Hussain who came out on top, clinching a place in the knockout stages.

Knockout Stage

Quarter-finals

Nav Hussain 2-0 Andrew Foster
Hussain had struggled to reach this stage and Foster had reached the plate finals of the last two BCI tournaments, so on paper it looked like Foster would emerge victorious. In the end though, Hussain had finally found some form and he won the match 2-0.

Danny Castel-Nuovo 2-1 Wayne Martin
This was a fantastic match. Castel-Nuovo had been playing well all day and he took Martin all the way to a deciding frame black ball. It such circumstances, Martin’s experience and determination usually sees him through but not this time. Castel-Nuovo sunk the all important black to progress to the semis and send Martin crashing out of a tournament that he has never previously failed to win.

Jason Stockton 2–1 Steve Butler
This was another close match. Butler romped away with the first frame but Stockton easily won the second to set up a deciding frame. Butler pushed Stockton all the way and had a chance to win the match with a relatively simple blue, but he couldn’t handle the pressure and it was Stockton who sunk blue and pink to win the match and progress to the semis.

Zeb Ahmed 2-0 Bob Wright
Wright had been playing well all day and Ahmed had quietly been doing the business. It proved a match too far for Wright who had played 11 frames without a break and was feeling it by this stage.

Semi-finals £15

Jason Stockton 2-0 Zeb Ahmed
Stockton hit the tournaments highest break in this match, an impressive run of 66. Ahmed couldn’t cope with the Stoke potter’s breakbuilding prowess and it was Stockton who set up a mouthwatering clash with Hussain in the final.

Nav Hussain 2-0 Danny Castel-Nuovo
Castel-Nuovo’s previous match against Wayne Martin must have really took it out of him. In contrast Hussain was ultra confident and he sailed into the final with a 2-0 win.

Final £60 / £30

Jason Stockton 2-0 Nav Hussain
Hussain was playing very well but his failure to protect his lead in both frames cost him dear. He raced into an early lead in the first frame thanks to a run of 56 but some excellent breakbuilding and safety play by Stockton brought him right back into it and eventually the Stoke player stole the frame from under Hussain’s nose. The second frame was a similar story as Hussain opened up a good lead thanks to a few small breaks. Stockton again clawed his way back into the frame though as Hussain missed some risky pots which left Stockton some good chances. Stockton produced the goods when it mattered to clinch the match and with it the £60 first prize. The cash will come in handy as he is facing a hefty repair bill on his car!

Highest Breaks

Jason Stockton 66,58 (£5)
Nav Hussain 56,42
Andrew Foster 54
Wayne Martin 45,40
