The Peoples Hall retain Knockout Plate

Nazareth House Snooker League

Week 22 Matches (7 April 2009)

DIVISION 1

In a rearranged match from earlier in the season, BCI Snooker Centre “A” defeated Cotgrave Welfare 5-3. The result did not have any bearing on the teams’ league standings, with BCI already confirmed as runners-up and Cotgrave already relegated, however both teams wanted to complete their fixtures. Team captain John Cyrek was the only Cotgrave player to win a singles frame, with Cotgrave’s other two wins coming in the pairs. Cyrek will now be looking to regroup over the summer in readiness for a serious challenge on the division 2 title next season. BCI captain Wayne Martin can be satisfied that his team finished just three points behind champions Arnold Civil Defence “A” and he will be looking to go one better next season.

KNOCKOUT PLATE FINAL

Stadium Leisure played host to a fantastic Knockout Plate final in which five of the eight frames went down to the pink or black. The Peoples Hall successfully defended the title they won last season with a 71 point victory over Arnold Civil Defence “B”, however they had to work hard for the win against a determined Arnold side.

Nav Hussain took an early lead in his frame against Sean Kelly, but a good fightback by Kelly ensured that Peoples Hall only had an 8 point lead going into frame two. Zeb Ahmed potted some good balls against Alan Cunningham to extend Peoples Hall's lead to 44 points. Kirk Wesselby played very well against Yas Abbas in frame three, particularly towards the end of the frame. Abbas blamed the table for his 16 points defeat but it was Wesselby's steady potting and accurate positional play that did the damage, reducing Peoples Hall's lead to 28 points. John Marshall eased the pressure on his team-mates with a resounding 70 point win against Stan Candler in frame four. Candler tried to power in the pink but the speed kept the ball out and Marshall gratefully took pink and black to put Peoples Hall 98 points up. Zed Zubair threatened to run away with his frame against Andy Nichols, but the Arnold player dug deep to restrict Zubair's winning margin to just 4 points. A very good performance by Nichols. Frame six went down to the black with Yasir Hussain victorious against Pete Ellins but by just 7 points. After adjusting for the handicaps, Peoples Hall were just 29 points in front going into the pairs frames. Nav Hussain and Zed Zubair took on Sean Kelly and Kirk Wesselby and a good 36 break from Zubair put the Peoples Hall pair well in front. However, Kelly and Wesselby played some terrific snooker to hit back and win the frame by 3 points. Alan Cunningham and Stan Candler were up against John Marshall and Zeb Ahmed on the other table and the Arnold pair needed to win by 27 points to take the title. Unfortunately for Arnold, Marshall and Ahmed were simply too strong and they won the frame fairly easily.

BCI 'B' take division two title

Nottingham & Notts Institutes Association Snooker League

Week 19 League Matches (6 April 2009)

DIVISION 1

In the only division 1 match to be played this week BCI 'E' beat Carlton LC 3-2. Daniel Di Folco however took the first frame for Carlton, with the aid of a 29 break, against Jon Mason by 61-49. Kwok Yip then took the second frame for BCI 'E' by beating Bob Walker 66-30. Wong Yip lost the third frame 27-63 to Carlton captain Andy Ball. Sam Haugh then took the last frame for BCI 'E' 65-23 over Bob Wright. This was a rehearsal for next week’s cup final between the same two teams.

DIVISION 2

BCI 'B' have taken the division 2 title after a 4-1 win over Oakleigh Lodge Social Club. Neil Elliott took a very close first frame by beating Paul "Spider" Wilkinson 59-57. Toby Irons had a 70 point win, 82-12 over Ryan Cooper. Mick Salmon, who is top of the ranking list, beat Steve Roe 62-28. Adam Robinson took a consolation frame for Oakleigh Lodge by beating Jeff Allan by 82-25. Spot On (Sneinton), although they can't now catch BCI 'B', did themselves a favour and moved 7 points clear in second place after a 5-0 win over Mapperley CC. Oakleigh Lodge remain third after their defeat and Mapperley surprisingly remain fourth. This is because BCI 'C' had a walk-over against Sherwood SC 'B' and only get 4 points. Nottingham Forest SSC suffered a 0-5 whitewash at the hands of Ruddington CC.

Keith Holgate crowned Notts Amateur Snooker Champion 2009

Pegasus Snooker Club was the venue for the best of seven frame final of the Notts Amateur Snooker Championship between BCI Snooker Centre’s Keith Holgate and Arnold Civil Defence’s John Fountain.

Fountain had defeated Mike Langdon, Barry Stark and Chris Winter to reach the final. Holgate had beaten Kirk Wesselby, three-time winner Tony Hart and Wayne Martin on route to the final.

Holgate got off to a good start, winning the opening frame 70-14. In frame two Holgate really started to flow, making an excellent 58 break to seal an 81-6 win. Fountain was unable to settle but his game improved in frame three as he made things much tougher for his opponent. Nevertheless, Holgate played some solid snooker to take a tight frame 51-35 and go 3-0 up. Fountain was now desperate to get a frame on the board and he got off to a steady start in frame four. Unfortunately for Fountain Holgate continued to produce the goods and he knocked in a quality 28 break to take the frame and lift the trophy for a third time.

Wollaton draw costs Mapperley runners-up spot

Nazareth House Snooker League

Week 21 League Matches (31 March 2009)

DIVISION 1

Pegasus Snooker Club enjoyed a moral boosting 5-3 win over Stadium Leisure in the final game of the regular season. After a miserable run of three straight defeats the club can now look forward to the play-offs with renewed confidence after a long season, which started poorly and never really ignited for last season’s runners-up. Jamie Mathers was in inspired form for Pegasus knocking in two breaks of 44 to see off Steve Butler whose only contribution to the frame was chalking his cue a few times! Stadium Leisure have slowly built up a steady team who have proved they are more than capable of causing a shock or two and when Bob Walker and Daniel Di Folco both won their frames the hunt was on for another scalp. Bob ‘The Legend’ Walker cleared up from the blue to win a hard fought frame against Steve Booth whilst Di Folco enjoyed a good win against Trevor Hodgkinson who was making his Pegasus debut. Fortunately for Pegasus, Jamie Mathers who was partnered by Hodgkinson, continued his good form to steer the team to an important win in the pairs frame against Walker & Di Folco. At Stadium it was no surprise that the frame between Mike Langdon and Stadium’s Matt Ellis went down to the black as the previous two this term were also settled in a similar manner. Once again it was Stadium’s Ellis who was left to rue his luck after an attempted pot on the black left Langdon with a simple pot to put Pegasus one up. Ross Wilkin enjoyed a good win against Pegasus new boy Danny Castel-Nuovo to level the score but Eric Towle got back to winning ways with a solid victory against Pete Gormley to put Pegasus back in front. The partnership of Langdon and Castel-Nuovo then made it three wins on the spin as they saw Pegasus home to victory with a comfortable 50 point winning margin against Wilkin and Stadium youngster Sean Hopkin.

BCI Snooker Centre 'A' sealed runners-up spot with a great 5-3 win over The Peoples Hall. At BCI, Jason Bettridge got things off to a good start with a win over Nav Hussain but Peoples Hall made it one apiece with a win from Zed Zubair over Tony Collins. Hanson Stowe (super sub) had a good win over the dangerous Yas Abbas and the pairing of Bettridge and Collins squeezed past the Peoples Hall pairing by 13 points. At Peoples Hall, Wayne Martin had a comprehensive victory over Zeb Ahmed with breaks of 29, 39 and 24. Yasir Hussain was up next against Steve Coleman in a tight contest that Coleman pinched on the blue. John Marshall then defeated Sam Haugh in another tight contest. In the pairs, Ahmed and Marshall went 49 points up against Coleman and Martin without breaking sweat. But with only 59 points left available, the BCI pair came back with some solid potting and a well laid snooker. Ahmed then left the brown over the pocket and the rest of the balls well placed for Martin. Sadly Martin missed a simple blue and allowed the Peoples Hall pair to win the frame.

The play-off semi-finals on 21st April will see Beeston Snooker Hall take on Pegasus Snooker Club and Stadium Leisure will play The Peoples Hall.

DIVISION 2

BCI Snooker Centre ‘B’ needed a win against rock bottom City Hospital Leisure Centre to pinch runners-up spot from Mapperley Community Centre, who could only draw 4-4 against Wollaton RBL. At City Hospital, Alan Taylor lost 27-41 to Clint Broome and Russ Kirk lost 30-61 to Paul Bradley. However, City captain Rob Wallace had a terrific 72-26 win against Craig Bradley and the pairing of Taylor and Wallace narrowly beat Broome and Stuart Bradley 42-31 to ensure the leg was tied. At BCI, despite some close frames, the home team sealed runners-up spot with an impressive 4-0 victory. D Salmon beat Dave Buckley 76-7, Mick Salmon beat Jordan Parnham 58-46, Toby Irons beat Dennis Peet 56-39 and Shaun Parkinson beat Sean Croft 69-57.

Mapperley will now face Oakleigh Lodge Social Club in the play-off semi-finals on 21st April with Phoenix Cue Sports taking on Lenton Liberal Club in the other semi-final.

Chris Needham put Top Spot ahead by beating Adam Goodall 53-47. It was then left to captain Daz Clarke to take the win and the extra point by beating Steve Needham 79-37. In the battle of the relegated teams it was Sherwood SC 'D' who ran out 4-1 winners at Masters SC. Gareth Evans started with a massive 107-13 win over Nigel Bradford. Arnold Civil Defence crowned champions once again

Nazareth House Snooker League

Re-scheduled League Matches (24 March 2009)

DIVISION 1

Arnold Civil Defence ‘A’ wrapped up this year’s championship with a good 5-3 victory over their neighbours, Pegasus Snooker Club. At Pegasus, Chris Brooks cleared up to see off a dogged effort from Brian Kinton before Jamie Mathers put Pegasus two up with a comfortable victory against Richard Tooley. Malc Belshaw picked up a crucial frame for Arnold against Steve Booth and then he and his partner Brian Kinton ensured the leg would be tied with a tight victory over Mathers and Booth in the doubles frame. At Arnold, Chris Winter had to dig deep against Pegasus’s Mike Langdon by potting a superb long brown and blue to win the frame. Winter appeared to be cruising, racing into a forty odd point lead but Langdon hit back with a run of 27 before giving himself a chance of pinching the frame with a clearance. Sadly for Langdon he didn’t play the best of positional shots from green to brown and broke down on 13 to give Winter the chance he needed to secure victory. Arnold’s skipper Gary Spencer had too much for Pegasus youngster Eric Towle who has gained some valuable experience from being given a good run in the team. James Notman scored well but also enjoyed a good run of the balls to see off Danny Castel-Nuovo and put Arnold three up. Castel-Nuovo had reduced his arrears to just 13 points after a bright start from Notman and seemed to have his opponent on the ropes. However, a fluked red seemed to kick-start Notman back into action from which he made a telling 22 break to seal the frame and the leg for Arnold. Pegasus did pick up a consolation frame in the doubles and a notable one at that. Castel-Nuovo got the Pegasus pairing off to a flyer starting the frame with a good 25 break before the inevitable fight-back from Winter and Spencer. Finding themselves 28 points behind with only the colours remaining, two successful snookers the second of which led to a free ball reduced the arrears and gave Winter a great chance of pinching the frame. The Pegasus pair breathed a sigh of relief when Winter over-cut the blue and a gleeful Langdon stepped up to sink the blue and pink to give the Pegasus pair a hard fought win.

Stadium Leisure went down 2-6 at the hands on BCI Snooker Centre who look odds on to take the runners-up spot. At Stadium, Wayne Martin eased past Pete Gormley, Neil Elliott pinched his frame on the black from Ross Wilkin and Sam Haugh defeated Stadium's 13-year-old debutante Sean Hopkin on the colours. The pairing of Martin and Elliott were then too strong for Gormley and Wilkin. At BCI things were tighter with the two sides fighting out a 2-2 draw. Jason Bettridge beat Daniel Di Folco 62-38, but Tony Collins lost 39-47 to Bob Walker and Steve Coleman lost 42-69 to Steve Butler. BCI avoided what would have been a rare home defeat as Bettridge and Collins defeated Di Folco and Walker 53-28.

Beeston Snooker Hall will face Pegasus Snooker Club in the play-off semi-finals after they suffered a narrow 3-5 defeat at the hands of The Peoples Hall.

DIVISION 2

City Hospital Leisure Centre were no match for Eastwood’s Phoenix Cue Sports as they went down 1-7. At Phoenix Dave Allsopp beat Jordan Parnham 66-36, but Nick Oakley lost to Rob Wallace on the black. Phoenix captain Stephen Lally beat Alan Taylor 57-26 and Anthony Adkin beat Dennis Peet 60-32. At City Hospital, Dave Buckley went down 43-82 to Steve Howard, Russ Kirk lost 42-57 to Ash Goring, Sean Croft was hammered 9-84 by Ryan Baker and Steve Tring narrowly lost out to Gary Birks 45-51.

Jason Turner had an easy 90-25 win against Chris Needham and Ant Scarborough potted some good long balls in his 71-25 win against Mick W.

DIVISION 2

BCI 'B' opened up an 11 point lead at the top of the division although they suffered a rare 2-3 defeat at the hands of Ruddington CC. Toby Irons built up a 68-10 lead against Nick Kirkman only for Kirkman to peg the final score back to 68-50. Jeff Allen beat Dennis Dyer 62-45 and this left Morris Hudspeth to win the match for Ruddington with a superb 75-32 win against Mick Salmon. Spot On (Sneinton) moved into second place after a 4-1 win over BCI 'C'. Oakleigh Lodge stay third despite a 4-1 loss at Mapperley CC. Mapperley move up the fourth after this win.
