Leaders suffer first defeat as title race hots up

Nazareth House Snooker League

Week 16 League Matches (10 February 2009)

DIVISION 1

Arnold Civil Defence ‘A’ suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 6-2 to title rivals BCI Snooker Centre ‘A’. BCI did the damage at home with a comprehensive 4-0 victory with wins for Jason Bettridge, Neil Elliott and Steve Coleman in the singles. At Arnold things were tighter with the dangerous trio of Spencer, Winter and Fountain playing for Arnold. Wayne Martin got BCI off to a good start with victory over Gary Spencer but Chris Winter levelled things up with a solid performance against Jon Mason. John Fountain comprehensively defeated Kwok Yip with a 35 break. This left the pairings of Martin and Mason against Winter and Fountain, with BCI coming out on top in a tactical frame.

Stadium Leisure secured another valuable point with a 4-4 draw against Beeston Snooker Hall, largely due to good performances from Barry Stark and Bob Walker. At Stadium, Barry Stark demolished Shane Kidd 83-18 but Matt Ellis lost on the black against Lee Harlow 55-60. Alan Ball then went down 26-74 to Clint I'Anson who did the damage with an excellent 52 break. Stark and Ellis then ensured the leg was tied with a 71-24 win against I'Anson and Sean Harlow. At Beeston, Tom Walters won a black ball frame against Danny Di Folco 66-54 but Bob Walker had a run of 32 on the way to a 49-38 win over Andy Spicer. Neil Jones made a terrific 56 clearance to defeat Steve Butler 93-31. In the pairs Butler and Walker took on Jones and Chris Hodgkinson. Jones made a 32 break but Walker was on fire as he had breaks of 23 and 38 to effectively seal the frame 79-40. Stadium were delighted with a draw in the absence of Pete Gormley, Clary Plowman and Ross Wilkin through illness.

Pegasus Snooker Club were made to wait until the final frame to secure the points against bottom of the table Arnold Civil Defence ‘B’. At Pegasus, Chris Brooks knocked in the night’s highest break with an excellent 82 against Arnold skipper Alan Cunningham. Jamie Mathers put Pegasus two up with a comfortable victory in his frame against Andy Nichols before Kirk Wesselby managed to fight off a good come-back from Andy Orange to pick up a frame for Arnold. Wesselby had looked comfortable leading by 32 with only the colours remaining but his failure to get out of two well laid snookers allowed Orange back into the frame, but it was Wesselby who held his nerve to sink a frame winning black. Brooks and Mathers then won in the pairs to secure a 3-1 home leg win. At Arnold, Sean Kelly looked in good touch knocking in a well taken 32 break to see off Pegasus’s Chris Piech to give the home side a perfect start. Mike Langdon levelled for Pegasus with a good sixty odd point win against Pat McLaughlin before Pete Ellins restored the lead for Arnold with victory over a determined Eric Towle. With the overall scoreline now at 4-3 in Pegasus’s favour, the final doubles frame would give Arnold a real opportunity to pick up a valuable point for the club. Sadly for Arnold the pairing of Kelly & Ellins never really got going and they soon fell behind by some 30 odd points before Langdon put the frame out of reach with a match winning 48 break to give Pegasus a narrow but important 5-3 win.

The Peoples Hall could only muster a 4-4 draw against Cotgrave Welfare. Nav Hussain was on form, firing in a terrific 77 break.

DIVISION 2

Wollaton Royal British Legion kept their slim hopes of a play-off place alive with a 5-3 win over City Hospital Leisure Centre. At City Hospital Rob Wallace beat A Winson 46-30, Sean Croft lost 40-62 to M Healy and Jordan Parnham lost 33-44 to M Hind. In the pairs Lee Archer and Wallace beat Hind and Healy 70-31. At Wollaton, Gordon Gunn lost 22-66 to the impressive Dave Buckley. Rex Benson beat Russ Kirk 52-41 and Ivan Noon beat Alan Taylor 48-14. In the pairs, Benson and Jack Packer beat Buckley and Dennis Peet.

Carlton sink Top Spot to reach final

Nottingham & Notts Institutes Association Snooker League

Knockout Cup and Plate Matches (9 February 2009)

KNOCKOUT CUP

Mapperley Community Centre defeated Sherwood Social Club ‘B’ in a delayed quarter-final match. Mapperley will now face BCI Snooker Centre ‘E’ in the semi-finals.

A 21 point start was the incentive for a massive win by Carlton Liberal Club against Top Spot. Danny Di Folco took the first frame in a close match with Mick Walker by 46-44. Bob Walker shone in the second frame, a 16 and a 24 break helping him to a 66-42 victory over Dave Milner. Milner had a very good 29 break in this frame. The fourth frame was a tragedy of errors by both players, and some flukes, but Bob Wright eventually ran out the winner by 64-63. Steve Needham was having the same amount of luck as his opponent, but it was a good blue and pink that won the frame for Wright. The third frame, which finished last, was a spectacularly easy win for Andy Ball. Ball beating C Needham by 70-12. Needham conceding the last three colours after it was evident that Top Spot had lost the contest.

KNOCKOUT PLATE

In the knockout plate semi-finals there was an easy win for Sherwood Social Club 'A' despite having to concede 77 points to Nottingham Forest Sportsman Social Club. Lee Crombie pulled 30 points back with a good 65-35 win against Harvey Pabla. Ant Scarborough made it another 22 points with a good 77-55 win. Jason Turner put Sherwood into the lead, defeating William 68-32. It was left to Brendan Murtagh to finish the rout with a magnificent 93-30 win over Keiron.

Joe Jogia wins BCI Open in style

BCI Open Snooker Tournament
15 February 2009

Main Tournament

Leicester's Joe Jogia did not drop a frame as he won the BCI Open Snooker Tournament on Sunday together with the £110 first prize and the £10 high break prize. Jogia won the best of 5 frame final 3-0 in under 40 minutes, helped by breaks of 70, 61 and 59. It was an awesome display which his opponent in the final, Jordan Geldard, could do nothing about. Geldard took home the £50 runners-up prize.

Naser Hussain had a good day, earning himself £20 for reaching the semi-finals. In the other semi-final, Mark Hird played well, running Jogia closer than the 2-0 scoreline suggests. In a practise frame prior to the final, Hird made a terrific 90 break which was luckily caught on film.

Plate Tournament
Lee Crombie who finished runner-up in the recent Spot-on Charity Tournament, picked up the £30 first prize for winning the plate. However he was pushed all the way by the impressive youngster Andrew Foster (£15) who only just lost on the black.

Pegasus flying as Peoples Hall falter

Nazareth House Snooker League

Week 15 League Matches (3 February 2009)

DIVISION 1

Pegasus moved above BCI ‘A’ into third place and just one point behind The Peoples Hall with a comfortable 6-2 victory against struggling Cotgrave Welfare. Whilst the destination of this years league championship looks a formality, the battle for the runners-up spot looks likely to go down to the wire with very little to separate the contesting teams. Most of the damage was inflicted at Pegasus where the home leg chalked up their 5th clean sheet of the season. Chris Brooks set the tone with a whopping 102 -11 points win against Cotgrave’s Ted Cope. Jamie Mathers was another comfortable winner against Chris King, but the most celebrated win of the night was Steve Booth’s first victory since late November. Booth was made to work for it though, as he came from behind to beat Cotgrave’s Phil Foster before Brooks & Mathers made sure of the 4-0 score line in the doubles frame. At Cotgrave only a late rally from the home team ensured there would be no away leg rout for the Pegasus team. Chris Piech had given Pegasus the best possible start when he outscored Harry Briody by 50 odd points, to be fair Briody had some rotten luck as he went in-off on several occasions. Pegasus’s Mike Langdon marked his 100th frame for the team with victory over Anthony McMahon by sinking green, brown and blue to win a closely contested frame. John Cyrek who is enjoying a good season pulled one back for Cotgrave with victory over Eric Towle before Cotgrave’s pairing of Briody & Cyrek levelled the leg against Pegasus’s Piech & Langdon in the final frame of the evening.

BCI effectively gave up their title ambitions with a 3-5 loss to Beeston. At BCI Jason Bettridge suffered a rare loss to Shane Kidd, Neil Elliott came from behind to win his frame against Chris Hodgkinson and Steve Coleman lost out to Tom Walters. Bettridge and Coleman gained some consolation with a demolition job in the pairs frame against Walters and Kidd. At Beeston Andy Spicer got the better of Wayne Martin, Jon Mason just lost out to Clint I'Anson, Kwok Yip defeated centurian Neil Jones with some fine matchplay and the partnership of Jones & I'Anson pipped Martin & Mason on the black following 2 good 30+ breaks from I'Anson and Mason respectively.

Stadium Leisure dented the title hopes of The Peoples Hall after holding them to a 4-4 draw. At Peoples Hall, Steve Butler was delighted to pinch a low scoring frame against the rarely defeated John Marshall. Matt Ellis came up against a player in fine form, Nasir Hussain, who made breaks of 18, 25 and 39 to secure a 90-35 win. Zeb Ahmed defeated Ross Wilkin and in the pairs frame Hussain and Ahmed just edged a nervy frame against Ellis and Butler 62-45. At Stadium, Barry Stark outclassed Nav Hussain 74-14, Danny Di Folco went down 34-74 to Zed Zubair and Bob Walker beat Yas Abbas 58-20. In the pairs Stark and Di Folco took on Hussain and Zubair and it was Di Folco who shone this time, making a fine 43 break as the Stadium pair cantered to a 76-9 victory.

DIVISION 2

Mapperley Community Centre maintained the pressure on top-of-the-table Sherwood Social Club with a fine 6-2 win against Lenton Liberal Club. At Mapperley, Matt Savage beat Richard Payne 102-8 but Lawrence Richards lost 36-59 to Doug Bough and Steve Dixon lost 37-55 to Don Merry. James Wood and Savage then lost 32-63 to Bough & Merry. At Lenton, Adam Goodall lost 11-42 to Chris Wright, Jim Wright beat Chris Starr 52-26 and Trevor Clarke lost 33-61 to Andy Carnell. Roy Hamlin and Melvin Smith lost 27-68 to Wright and Starr.

Sherwood return to form at City Hospital

Nottingham & Notts Institutes Association Snooker League

Week 12 League Matches (4 February 2009)

DIVISION 1

City Hospital Leisure Centre went top of the division despite a 2-3 loss at home to Sherwood Social Club 'A'. This was a brilliant return to form for Sherwood after their 0-5 defeat at the hands of Carlton Liberal Club last week. BCI 'A' remain in second place even though they were without a match this week. Top Spot stay joint third after their match at Sherwood Social Club 'D' was postponed. BCI 'E' moved into fifth spot after a comprehensive 4-1 win at Masters Ssnooker Club. Wong Yip won a very close first frame beating Nigel Bradford 54-48. Kwok Yip played well against a lacklustre James Robinson, winning 86-26. Paul Bell pulled a frame back for Masters with a very good 82-47 win over Sam Haugh. Jon Mason secured the last frame for BCI 'E' with a good 76-30 win over young Eric Towle. Masters remain rooted to the foot of the table.

DIVISION 2

BCI 'B' were due to play Oakleigh Lodge, however only Neil Elliott turned up. He lost his frame to Steve Roe 48-54 and as none of his team-mates arrived, Oakleigh Lodge won the match 5-0. This moves Oakleigh Lodge into second place. Ruddington Conservative Club beat Nottingham Forest Sportsman Social Club 3-2. All of the other matches were postponed at the last minute due to the heavy snowfalls, however Sherwood Social Club 'B' conceded their match to BCI 'C'. BCI 'C' get 4 points, as per rules for a claimed game, and Sherwood 'B' lose 5 points.

Beeston win dramatic cup match

Nazareth House Snooker League

Knockout Cup and Plate Matches (27 January 2009)

KNOCKOUT CUP

The KO Cup quarter-final between Stadium Leisure and Beeston Snooker Hall was full of drama, eventually coming down to a black ball finish in the pairs after nearly three nerve-racking hours of snooker at Beeston. Things were pretty tight at Stadium with Ross Wilkin beating Chris Hodgkinson by 15 points. Bob Walker had a run of 43 in his 13 point victory over Chung Cheung. Barry Stark struggled with a strange table but still beat Tom Walters by 36 points. Shane Kidd then had an important 44 point win over Clary Plowman which reduced Stadium's lead to just 20 points.

At Beeston Matt Ellis played very well, only losing by 4 points to Clint I'Anson. Pete Gormley also had a terrific game as he lost by just 12 points to century man Neil Jones. With Stadium still leading by 4 points, things were looking good for Stadium who were receiving 70 points on the handicap. Unfortunately Steve Butler produced one of his worst performances of the season, going down by a massive 72 points to a very clinical Andy Spicer who made two good 20+ breaks. At 10pm, with just the pairs remaining, Stadium's lead was just 2 points. On recent form the Stadium pairing of Gormley and Ellis should have stood no chance against Jones and I'Anson, however the Stadium pair produced a fine tactical performance to open up a 30 point lead. Eventually, Stadium led by 22 points with just 22 on the table. Ellis attempted a safety shot on the brown and was distraught to see the white go in off in the middle bag. Spicer then potted brown and a beautiful blue from which he landed perfectly on the pink. The Stadium lads couldn't bear to look as Spicer stroked in the pink but the white ran too far leaving Spicer with a very difficult thin cut on the black into the top pocket. Spicer knew that it could easily rattle in the jaws to leave a sitter for Gormley but he held his nerve superbly and potted the black to win the match for Beeston by just 4 points.

BCI Snooker Centre “A” beat Oakleigh Lodge Social Club by 76 points despite having to concede 200 points start. At home BCI made headway into the handicap by winning by 184 points. At Oakleigh things were tighter with Jon Mason getting the better of the dangerous Jason Turner and Wayne Martin winning a marathon frame against Rob Selby. Kwok Yip was the only casualty for BCI losing to Colin Tutin who potted some fantastic long balls and kept Yip off the table.

Arnold Civil Defence “A” beat BCI Snooker Centre “B” by 57 points. Chris Winter made a very good 51 break in his singles frame. Sherwood Social Club were the only division 2 side to make it into the semi-finals as they beat City Hospital Leisure Centre by 55 points.

KNOCKOUT PLATE

The Peoples Hall beat Wollaton Royal British Legion by a massive 320 points, Cotgrave Welfare beat Phoenix Cue Sports by 22 points and Arnold Civil Defence “B” beat Lenton Liberal Club by just 1 point.
