Secretary defeats Treasurer in committee battle

Nottingham & Notts Institutes Association Snooker League

Week 4 League Matches (17 November 2008)

DIVISION 1

Sherwood SC 'A' still lead the division by 1 point after a convincing 4-1 win away at Spot On (Hucknall). Team of the week BCI 'E' had a formidable 5-0 win against their rivals for the title BCI 'A' and move into joint second place. The other joint second place team City Hospital LC had a very good 4-1 win at home to fourth place Top Spot. Carlton LC move into fifth spot with a convincing 4-1 win at bottom placed Masters SC. Danny Di Folco had a convincing 62-46 win over Cary Davies, Bob Walker never got going in his frame and was beaten 35-54 by Nigel Bradford, Andy Ball had a black ball winner against James Booth (58-45) and Bob Wright (league secretary) played James Robinson (league treasurer) in what turned out to be a game of mistakes by both players. Wright playing against his ex-team mates finally ran out the winner by 49-24. BCI 'A' drop to sixth after their defeat. Spot On (Hucknall) stay seventh and joint bottom with Masters Sc are Sherwood SC'D' who didn't have a game this week.

DIVISION 2

There are joint leaders in division 2 after last weeks leaders Oakleigh Lodge only managed a 3-2 win against Spot On (Sneinton) ,who are now second to bottom. The other joint leaders are Sherwood SC 'B' who had a very good win against Ruddington CC. Ruddington only came with 3 players. Third placed Mapperley CC had a devestating 5-0 win away at Nottingham Forest SSC. Nottingham Forest SSC are still without a point this season after their fourth 0-5 defeat. The battle of the BCI's was won by BCI'C' against BCI 'B'. S.Capsey senior got his team off to a flying start with a 58-33 win over Neil Elliott. Young Connor Kelliher got the better of Toby Irons by 59-35 to give the 'C' team a 2 frame lead. However Mick Salmon got the 'B' team back in with a close 57-55 win against Shaun Parkinson. Ian Cambell-Dawson managed to get the frame scores level with a win by 46-35 against S.Capsey junior, but it was the 'C' team that took the extra point. When are Nottingham Forest SSC going to win a frame? Can Ruddington CC get 4 players and make a comeback? These questions, and many more, answered in next weeks report.

Defending champions fall at first hurdle

Nazareth House Snooker League

Knockout Cup First Round Matches (18 November 2008)

The first round matches in the Knockout Cup took place this week and quite a few teams would have welcomed the diversion from their league struggles. As always, all teams in the competition received a handicap which was based on their performance to date and this made for some interesting results.

City Hospital Leisure Centre, a team that has never tasted success in the competition, received an 80 points start against Lenton Liberal Club and the match turned out to be an exciting encounter that nearly ended in a draw. At Lenton, Lawrence Richards demolished Lee Archer 93-33 but Rob Wallace beat James Wood 70-47 to put City Hospital back in control. Steve Dixon then turned on the style to defeat Des Oldham 76-16 before the Lenton pairing of Richards and Wood suffered a 38-72 defeat to Archer and Wallace. All this gave Lenton a 63 point leg win which meant that they must win their away leg by just 18 points for victory.

At City Hospital, Adam Goodall lost to Russ Kirk 58 - 62 and Jim Wright lost to Dennis Peet 33-62. The in-form Roy Hamlin pulled a few points back for Lenton with a 48-43 win against Steve Tring and this left the Lenton pair of Goodall and Wright needing to beat Kirk and Peet by 46 points for victory. The Lenton pair led by 38 points with just the black remaining but both of them were guilty of missing good chances to pot the black for a draw. Eventually the black was potted by Peet to secure City Hospital’s first victory of the season, the winning margin just 14 points.

Beeston Snooker Hall continued to impress with a resounding 179 points victory over defending champions Arnold Civil Defence “B”. Beeston were giving away 70 points on the handicap but Arnold could have done with three times that amount. At Beeston, talented Neil Jones beat Alan Cunningham 70-43 and Andy Spicer beat Andy Nichols 90-36. Clint I’Anson put on an awesome display, reeling off breaks of 15,16,33 and 45 to hammer Pete Ellins 134-7. In the pairs, Jones and Kaleem Ashraf defeated Ellins and Cunningham 81-23.

At Arnold, Stan Candler had a good 68-22 win against Chung Cheung, but Kirk Wesselby 42-49 to Steve Cheung and Bill Burton lost 39-44 to Shane Kidd. In the pairs, Candler and Wesselby were trailing by 17 points to Chris Hodgkinson and Steve Cheung as the result of the Beeston leg filtered through. They therefore conceeded the match knowing they needed a miracle to avoid defeat.

Arnold Civil Defence “A” also impressed with a huge 198 points victory over Mapperley Community Centre. This was despite conceeding 160 points start to Mapperley. At Arnold there was some good solid potting by the experienced Chris Winter who also made a terrific 49 clearance. Gary Spencer had to fight hard for his victory after just coming out of hospital over the weekend.. The only casualty for Arnold was James Notman who was beaten by Andy Carnell. In the doubles Notman and Spencer did enough to ensure Arnold won the home leg by 77 points.

At Mapperley the rarely beaten Malc Belshaw lost his singles frame, but Brian Kinton and John Fountain both won hansomely, with Fountain making a good 44 break. In the doubles, Fountain and Kinton compounded the misery for Mapperley with a good win that gave the Arnold team a 121 points away leg win.

BCI Snooker Centre “A” progressed into the next round after a narrow 13 points victory over Pegasus Snooker Club. At Pegasus Chris Brooks got Pegasus off to a dream start with a huge 80 point margin win over Wayne Martin thanks to an excellent 50 break. BCI's Jonathan Mason beat Jamie Mathers in a close contest 53-46 to record his second victory at Pegasus this season. The frame between BCI's Kwok Yip and Steve Booth was also a very tight encounter with the Pegasus man showing his class with a calmly taken 25 clearance to win by just 7 points. In the final frame of the leg the BCI pairing of Wayne Martin and Sam Haugh recorded an excellent 62-40 victory against Chris Brooks and Jamie Mathers to reduce their deficit in probably the key frame of the match.

At BCI Chris Piech enjoyed an excellent 30 point victory over BCI's Jason Bettridge. Piech opened up a healthy lead with a good 33 break before missing a pink into the middle pocket which allowed Bettridge back in. The miss very nearly proved costly as the classy Bettridge looked all set to clear the table but he missed a relatively simple blue into the middle bag from which a thankful Piech cleared up to condemn Bettridge to his first loss of the season. BCI's Steve Coleman soon got his team in front though with a wonderful potting display as he ran out a healthy 64-21 winner against Scott Bates. The frame between Pegasus's Mike Langdon and Neil Elliott was much closer. Langdon opened up an early 21 point lead only to see his opponent strike back after an initial fluked red with a good 27 break. From then on in it was a very open and entertaining frame with both players knocking long pots in for fun but sadly for Langdon, several rotten in-offs gave Elliott the chances he needed to make sure of the frame leaving Langdon only the pink and black as consolation to lose by a narrow 4 points. This all meant that the final frame of the evening between BCI's Hanson Stowe and the inexperienced Andy Orange would decide the outcome of the tie. Stowe had built up an excellent 40 odd point lead by the time the BCI home leg arrived back from Pegasus with the score-sheet and this led to frantic calculations and scribblings from both sides. It was decided that, providing the scoreline didn't widen, it would be the Pegasus team through to the next round. Unfortunately for the Pegasus team, Orange seemed out of sorts and a little twitchy compared to the more experienced Stowe who picked off the remaining reds and colours to power BCI over the line with an excellent 71-17 victory.

Stadium Leisure beat Cotgrave Welfare by a healthy 162 points with most of the damage being done at Stadium where the trio of Barry Stark, Clary Plowman and Pete Gormley played some terrific snooker. Stark beat the dangerous Harry Briody 82-29, Plowman beat Ted Cope 77-60 and Gormley beat Colin Armstrong 65-26. In the pairs, Stark and Gormley were rampant against Briody and Armstrong as they ran out 94-23 winners.

Things were much tighter at Cotgrave as Matt Ellis lost by 6 points to Billy Johnson and Bob Walker went down by 56 points to Steve Richards. Danny Di Folco pulled things back for Stadium with a good 43 point victory over Anthony McMahon and in the pairs, Walker and Di Folco beat John Cyrek and Johnson by just 1 point.

Oakleigh Lodge Social Club were grateful of their 200 points start against Peoples Hall as they won a pulsating match by just 30 points.

Sherwood Social Club conceeded 160 points start to Wollaton Royal British Legion but they still managed to win the match by 40 points as Mick Salton, Paul Bell and Les Smith all played particularly well away from home.

Also through to the next round are BCI Snooker Centre “B” who beat Phoenix Cue Sports. All first round losers will now be entered into the Knockout Plate competition.

Martin made to work by Stark in BCI Open

BCI Snooker Open

A very strong field turned up to compete in the BCI Open on Sunday 16th November 2008. The popular round robin format was used again which provided every competitor with at least three matches. The top two players in the four man group and the top three in the five man groups progressed to the quarter-finals.

Group A
Barry Stark won all four of his matches in the group, dropping only two frames in the process. Jason Bettridge also performed well as did Mike Langdon who had excellent wins against Lee Crombie and Derby youngster Alex Anastasiou.

Group B
Wayne Martin struggled a little and he almost went down 2-0 to Steve Butler, however Butler missed match ball pink and Martin fought back for a 2-1 victory. Out-of-sorts Chris Piech beat Martin but then lost his other three matches to leave him rooted to the bottom of the table. Neil Elliott was unlucky not to make the quarter-finals. He finished level with Butler but Butler progressed by virtue of his 2-1 victory over Elliott.

Group C
Belper’s Jimmy Gratton blew away the opposition in group C as he won all three matches without dropping a frame. Nav Hussain also progressed but he failed to reach the heights that secured him a runner-up spot in October’s Eastwood Open.

Quarter-finals
Tony Collins 2-0 Jason Bettridge
Steve Butler 2-0 Mike Langdon
Wayne Martin 2-0 Nav Hussain
Barry Stark 2-0 Jimmy Gratton

Semi-finals £15
Wayne Martin 2-0 Tony Collins
Barry Stark 2-0 Steve Butler

Final £50 / £30
Wayne Martin 3-2 Barry Stark
Wayne Martin made a superb 77 break in the deciding frame of the final against Barry Stark to secure the title of BCI Open champion for the second consecutive time. Martin took the opening frame but it was a scrappy affair. Stark then pulled one back with the help of a 32 break, however Martin went 2-1 up with a run of 28 in the third frame. Neither player was at their best but it was Stark who took the fourth frame to force the decider. In the final frame Stark opened up a small lead but Martin soon clawed it back. Stark then missed a relatively easy black off its spot and this allowed Martin to capitalise as he made a brilliant 77 break. It looked like he was on for a 104 clearance but as he took a black off the final red he left himself a difficult long yellow which rattled in the jaws and failed to drop.

Highest Breaks
Wayne Martin 77,43,42,31 (£5)
Jimmy Gratton 65,64
Jason Bettridge 62,60
Barry Stark 40,32
Tony Collins 40
Lee Crombie 37
Mike Langdon 36,34
Steve Butler 34

Still no points for Nottingham Forest SSC

Nottingham & Notts Institutes Association Snooker League

Week 3 League Matches (10 November 2008)

DIVISION 1

Sherwood SC 'A' stay joint top of the division despite losing to new third placed team City Hospital LC. A good win by Chris Clarke (City Hospital) over Lee Crombie (Sherwood) by 26 points in the first frame was levelled by Jason Turner (Sherwood) with a small win over Gaz. Ant Scarborough (Sherwood) gave his team a 2-1 advantage only for Glen (City Hospital) to level the match with a win against Brendon Murtagh. The extra point went to City Hospital on the points count up. Top Spot moved into joint top place with a resounding 5-0 win over Sherwood SC 'D'. BCI 'E' move above their BCI 'A' team, who were without a match this week, with a 4-1 win over 3 man Masters SC. Kwok Yip (BCI) took the first frame with a 80-55 win over James Booth (Masters). Cary Davies pulled Masters level on frames with a good 55-30 win over Sam Haugh. Jonathan Mason (BCI) had a scare in the third frame only winning by 1 point over Paul Bell. The fourth frame was conceeded. Carlton LC, in their first home match of the season, moved up to sixth against a depleted Spot On (Hucknall) team that have lost their captain at the moment through a hand injury. In the opening frame Danny Di Folco (Carlton) was in devestating form and had a comforable 78-34 win over M.Grocock. Bob Walker (Carlton) on the other table was just as devastating against Tim Hudson (Spot On) as he won 74-32. Andy Ball was not having such luck and was being left behind only to pull back with a 23 break and only lose the frame by 9 points a against Adam Goodall. Bob Wright (Carlton) was being given a lesson in potting by M. Harper (Spot On). He did pull some points back at the end of the frame which were enough to give Carlton LC the 3-2 win - their first of the season. This leaves Spot On next to bottom and Masters SC bottom of the division.

DIVISION 2

The new leaders of the division are Oakleigh Lodge who had a good 4-1 win away at Mapperley CC. Sherwood SC 'B' move into second place after a 5-0 win away at Nottingham Forest SSC. Nottingham Forest SSC are still to win a frame this season and remain bottom of the division. Ruddington CC move to third place after a win against BCI 'B'. Neil Elliott (BCI) got his team off to a good start by beating Morris Hudspeth (Ruddington) by 73-50. Nick Kirkman (Ruddington) then pulled the match level with a small 62-56 win over Toby Irons (BCI). Dennis Dyer (Ruddington) then pulled his team ahead by beating Mick by 48-32. It was Dave Griffith (Ruddington) who had the biggest win of the night over Ian Dawson (BCI) 84-28 giving Ruddington a 4-1 win and third spot in the division. This loss by BCI drops them to joint fourth place. BCI 'C' also lost by 2-3 against Spot On (Sneinton) but stay equal with their 'B' team in joint fourth place. Mapperley CC 's loss to Oakleigh Lodge leaves them in sixth place, with Spot On (Sneinton) in seventh place.

Young Towle sets new Pegasus record

Nazareth House Snooker League

Week 7 League Matches (11 November 2008)

DIVISION 1

Pegasus Snooker Club moved to within three points of the league leaders after a resounding 7-1 victory over struggling Stadium Leisure. At Pegasus Chris Brooks closed out his frame against Steve Butler on the colours whilst Jamie Mathers had a welcome win against Bob Walker. Eric Towle became the youngest player to win a frame for the Pegasus team at only 13 years of age after a dominant performance against Danny Di Folco. Chris Brooks and Jamie Mathers then romped home in the pairs with the help of a good 46 break from Brooks to record a 4-0 home leg win. At Stadium Mike Langdon narrowly edged out Matt Ellis after the Stadium man stuck up the pink over the corner bag. Langdon had looked comfortable building up a healthy lead, but from three reds out it was all Ellis and but for finishing on the wrong side of the pink the frame would in all probability, have gone the other way. Stadium's Clary Plowman rolled back the years with a terrific victory over Steve Booth for Stadium's only success of the night but Chris Piech restored the lead for Pegasus with a comfortable win against Pete Gormley. The pairing of Piech and Langdon and Stadium's Ellis and Plowman then finished the match with perhaps the best frame of the night. Langdon scored well for Pegasus knocking in two twenty odd breaks but they could not shake off the Stadium pair and when Plowman knocked in the Brown and Blue the frame looked all over for the Pegasus pair. However, Plowman missed the pink in what was to be a double blow as the pink came to rest in the jaws of the pocket from which Piech converted to win the leg 3-1.

BCI Snooker Centre “A” had an off night as they suffered a 5-3 defeat against title rivals Peoples Hall. At Peoples Hall Wayne Martin suffered a rare defeat as he went down on the black. Jon Mason was beaten easily by Zeb Ahmed and John Marshall easily disposed of Kwok Yip. In the pairs Martin and Sam Haugh were well beaten. At BCI, Jason Bettridge maintained his 100% record with a good win over Nav Hussain. Tony Collins and Neil Elliott were also comfortable winners against Yas Abbas and Nav's brother. The BCI pair of Steve Coleman and Neil Elliott only just lost a quality frame on the black as they came back from 43 down following a good 30+ break from Hussain.

Arnold Civil Defence “A” had an excellent 6-2 win against Beeston Snooker Hall. At Beeston Chris Winter took the first frame but Clint I'Anson made a terrific 45 break to pull a frame back for Beeston. Arnold’s James Notman won the third frame and Chris Winter and John Fountain won the pairs frame. At Arnold, the Beeston boys didn’t have much luck, despite having their very own mascot in the form of Mr David Gibson. Arnold took the first frame with a solid performance from Tony Hart who had a run of 46. Beeston's Chung Cheung replied with a win against Brian Kinton but Neil Jones struggled to get going and went down to Malcolm Belshaw. Arnold's Belshaw and Kinton then had an easy win in the pairs against Steve Cheung and Neil Jones who both made mistakes during the frame.

Arnold Civil Defence “B” and Cotgrave Welfare couldn’t be separated as they fought out a 4-4 draw. At Arnold Sean Kelly beat Billy Johnson and Stan Candler beat Colin Armstrong. Newcomer John Chattin went down to Cotgrave’s 2007/08 player of the season Phil Foster. In the pairs Kelly and Chattin beat Foster and Cope 50-37. At Cotgrave Anthony McMahon and Alan Cunningham fought out a tactical frame which Cunningham looked destined to win as he fluked the final yellow, however a double kiss left him snookered on the green and McMahon punished him by clearing the colours to take the frame. John Cyrek lost his 100% record as he was out-potted by young Kirk Wesselby. Harry Briody was in inspired form against Arnold captain Andy Nichols. Briody was almost 40 in front before Nichols scored and eventually ran out 77-17 winner. In the pairs Cyrek rediscovered his form as he and McMahon ran out easy winners against Cunningham and Wesselby.

DIVISION 2

Early leaders Sherwood Social Club could only draw 4-4 against a rejuvinated Lenton Liberal Club. At Lenton Joe Lunney beat Paul Bell but Steve Dixon lost on a re-spotted black to Gareth Evans. James Wood also lost to Les Smith but the pairing of Dixon and Wood beat Evans and Smith 60-42. At Sherwood Adam Goodall had a great win against Lee Crombie as he overturned a 40 point deficit to pinch it on the black. In-form Jim Wright beat Ant Scarborough but Sherwood captain Mick Salton beat Melv Smith and Ross Scarborough beat Trevor Clarke.

BCI Snooker Centre “B” beat City Hospital Leisure Centre 6-2. At BCI D Salmon defeated Rob Wallace in a close frame with a fluked blue proving crucial at the death. Dennis Peet played well to narrowly beat Shaun Parkinson and Toby Irons got off to a flier against Des Oldham who was unable to recover. Dennis Peet and Rob Wallace took the pairs in another open frame with Rob Wallace perhaps benefitting from sharing Dennis Peets new(ish) cue. There was a comprehensive 4-0 win for BCI at City Hospital. It was uphill for the home side from the point Clint Broome knocked in an excellent 39 break in the opening frame. Paul Bradley went on to defeat Russ Kirk in the next before Steve Tring saw a 20 point lead disappear against Stuart Bradley who fought back well to win a tight frame.

Nottingham Forest SSC whitewashed

Nottingham & Notts Institutes Association Snooker League

Week 2 League Matches (3 November 2008)

DIVISION 1

Early leaders in the division Sherwood SC 'A' had a some what easy win over a lacklustre Carlton LC. Lee Crombie having a relatively easy win over Danny Di Folco (57-27), Ant Scarborough getting the better of Bob Walker (57-44), Jason Turner easily beating Andy Ball (80-17) and Brendon Murtagh coming back from a hopeless situation against Bob Wright. It was Wright's own fault, or faults, that handed the frame to Murtagh (65-59) Sherwood winning by 5-0. In joint second place are City Hospital LC and BCI 'A'. BCI 'A' took the extra point in a 3-2 win over Top Spot. D.Milner for Top Spot got their team of to a good win over Jason Betteridge (70-52). This was pulled back by Tony Collins for BCI 'A' with a good (57-35) win over Mick Walker. C. Needham restored Top Spot advantage with a close win over Wayne Martin (63-58). It was up to Steve Coleman to win the match for BCI 'A' which he did with a 58-45 win. This gave the match to BCI 'A' by 7 points. City Hospital LC had a bit of a scare only managing to win by 3-2 over newly promoted Sherwood SC 'D'. BCI 'E' made a come back after last weeks defeat by beating Spot On (Hucknall) by 4-1. This was Spot On's first match of the season. Masters SC were without a match this week.

DIVISION 2

Oakleigh Lodge go into joint top place with a 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest SSC. Nottingham Forest SSC are still without a point after 2 matches. Things can only get better. BCI 'B' stay joint top despite a 2-3 defeat away at Sherwood SC 'B' who stay 5th despite the win. Neil Elliott Managed a small 57-54 win over Manny Sant, Toby Irons had a good win over Ross 43-30, ( Both for BCI 'B' ) Ashley Renshaw had a very good win over Ian Campbell-Dawson 60-35, but Joey Griffin won his frame and the match for Sherwood by just 4 points over Paul, which meant that Sherwood had won by 13 points. BCI 'C' won a close match with Mapperley CC 3-2 and by just 4 points. S Capsey (Senior) got BCI off to a good start by beating Doug Bough by 30 points ( 71-41 ). Geoff Merry pulled 27 of those points back by beating Shaun Parkinson by 66-39. Don Merry then edged Mapperley into a 13 point lead by beating S.Capsey (Junior) 69-53. It was left to young Connor Kelliher to win the match for BCI 'C' with a good win over Andy Carnell by 58-41.

Beeston are starting to impress

Nazareth House Snooker League

Week 6 League Matches (4 November 2008)

DIVISION 1

Pegasus Snooker Club came from 4-2 behind to snatch a dramatic 4-4 draw against league leaders BCI Snooker Centre 'A' in an entertaining encounter. At Pegasus Chris Brooks got the first frame on the board for Pegasus with a comfortable win over BCI's Sam Haugh whilst BCI's Wayne Martin looked in good touch as he knocked in classy 47 and 37 breaks against Jamie Mathers to level the score. Jonathan Mason put BCI's noses in front with a solid victory against Steve Booth before a dramatic black ball pairs win for Pegasus tied the leg. Both Martin and Kwok Yip had failed in their attempts with tough blacks before Brooks held his nerve to sink a terrific long pot to win the frame for Pegasus. In the overall context of the match the tactical switch of sacrificing Sam Haugh would now only pay off providing the home leg could defeat Pegasus at Bulwell and all seemed to be going to plan with BCI taking an early two nil lead. Jason Bettridge knocked in an excellent 36 break after Pegasus's Chris Piech broke down in the balls to keep his 100% record going whilst the frame between Scott Bates and Neil Elliott went down to the wire with Elliott winning on the black. With BCI now only needing one more frame for victory it was the Pegasus captain Mike Langdon who gave his team a much needed lift with a gritty 65-52 win over Tony Collins in an hour long tactical epic. Langdon managed to pot the final two reds with colours along with the yellow and green to haul himself back into contention before eventually sinking the pink and then 'spanking' the black along the rail into the corner bag for the win. The Pegasus's pairing of Piech and Langdon then went on to beat BCI's Steve Coleman and Neil Elliott after Piech cut back the blue into the middle bag to leave BCI requiring a snooker before Langdon sunk the pink to ensure the points would be shared.

Arnold Civil Defence ‘B’ lost their sixth match in a row, this time to the impressive Beeston Snooker Hall who moved into third place with a 7-1 win. Alan Cunningham was totally outplayed by Andy Spicer 62-15. Neil Jones got off to a flier against Arnold captain Andy Nichols with breaks of 29 and 14, but Nichols fought back with a run of 24. Nichols eventually conceeded when he required two snookers on the pink, Jones winning 68-41. Clint I'Anson was too strong for Pete Ellins, winning 78-15. In the pairs Cunningham and Ellis never got into it, losing out 68-29. After the match Cunningham said “They were the best three players we have come up against this season”.

At Arnold. Sean Kelly lost to Shane Kidd 31-69, John Chattin, making his debut, playing off the cush miscued the pink and lost to Chris Hodgkinson 62-70. Kirk Wesselby then lost to Chung Cheung 30-61. Kelly and Wesselby managed to win the pairs 64-21 against Kidd and Steve Cheung to avoid the whitewash.

Stadium Leisure remain in the relegation zone after they could only draw against Cotgrave Welfare. At Stadium, Barry Stark stood in for the absent Matt Ellis and he coasted to a 100-1 victory against "sacrificial pawn" Ted Cope, helped by superb breaks of 46 and 47. Clary Plowman struggled against Billy Johnson who had all the running in a 59-36 win. Captain Pete Gormley lost out to a fluked pink at the end of his 46-61 defeat to Phil Foster. In the pairs, Stark and Plowman proved too strong for Colin "Pit Prop" Armstrong and Geordie Johnson the Alan Shearer look-a-like, as they won the frame 66-7.

At Cotgrave, Bob Walker won easily against Ant McMahon who had some very bad luck and seemed to leave Walker on every time he missed. Steve Richards beat Danny Di Folco with some excellent potting on the other table. John Cyrek hardly missed a ball as he hammered Steve Butler to leave the pairing of Walker and Di Folco needing a win in the pairs to secure a much needed point for Stadium. They were up against Harry Briody and Cyrek. Di Folco got the Stadium pair off to a terrific start with a 24 break that could have been a lot more but for a missed black. Walker and Di Folco then romped to victory to ensure the match finished 4-4.

DIVISION 2

Phoenix Cue Sports got back to winning ways with a 6-2 win against next to bottom Wollaton RBL.

Lenton Liberal Club welcomed back classy Joe Lunney who won his singles and pairs frames to help Lenton win the match 7-1 against bottom of the table City Hospital Leisure Centre. At home, the only Lenton player to suffer defeat was James Wood who went down 30-61 to Alan Taylor. Steve Dixon beat City Hospital captain Rob Wallace 44-42. Joe Lunney beat Russ Kirk 67-41 and in the pairs Lunney and Dixon beat Kirk and Des Oldham 64-32.

At City Hospital, Adam Goodall beat Lee Archer 55-25, Jim Wright beat Dennis Peet 38-25 and Roy Hamlin beat Barry Chadwick 48-12. Hamlin was potting for fun and at one stage he got so carried away that he mistakenly potted two reds in succession. Hamlin then went on to partner Goodall in the pairs frame against Chadwick and Steve Tring and the Lenton pair were on fire as they ran out 62-5 winners.

Sherwood Social Club won the battle of the top two as they beat Mapperley Community Centre 5-3. The strong Sherwood team led by captain Mick Salton have only lost 14 frames all season. Mapperley remain second despite the defeat.

The surprise result in the first division was a 4-1 win by Sherwood SC 'A' over BCI 'E'. BCI 'E' being runners-up in the summer and Sherwood SC 'A' being relegated. The newly promoted teams didn't fare so well. Masters SC going down 1-4 at last year’s third placed team Top Spot. Sherwood SC 'D' also went down by the same score to last year’s league champions BCI 'A'. City Hospital LC had a good start to the campaign with a 4-1 win at home to Carlton LC. Chris Clarke started the match with a superb 80 break against an unlucky Danny Di Folco.

DIVISION 2

The surprise in this division was a 4-1 win by Mapperley CC against a Ruddington CC team that had just won the division 3 title in the summer. BCI 'C', who were runners-up in the same division, got their campaign off to a winning start with a 3-2 away win at Oakleigh Lodge. The new team in the league, Nottingham Forest Sportsman Social Club, couldn't manage to win a frame against a dominant BCI 'B who won the match 5-0. The Nottingham Forest SSC team are a very young team and they are sure to come good against weaker opposition. Sherwood SC 'B' and Spot On Sneinton became the victims of their own folly. With the match tied at 2-2 and the aggregate scores 216-216, neither team knew the rules. The rules state that the last two opponents should play a respotted black but as they failed to do this neither team benefitted from the bonus point on offer to the winner.

BCI are sitting pretty as Beeston cause upset

Nazareth House Snooker League

Week 5 League Matches (28 October 2008)

DIVISION 1

BCI Snooker Centre “A” ran out comfortable 6-2 winners against Cotgrave Welfare, although the Cotgrave leg was very close and could have gone either way. At BCI, Jason Bettridge continued his unbeaten streak with a win against Ted Cope. Neil Elliott won against Colin Armstrong and Hanson Stowe beat Phil Foster. The BCI pairing of Tony Collins and Elliott were too strong for Cope and Armstrong. At Cotgrave, Wayne Martin was too strong for Harry Briody but Jon Mason only just pinched the frame on the black against Ant McMahon. Kwok Yip lost on the pink to Billy Johnson who potted some tremendous balls towards the end of the frame and Sam Haugh lost on the pink to John Cyrek in a highly tactical battle that went to the wire.

Beeston Snooker Hall caused an upset as they beat the leaders Peoples Hall 5-3. At Beeston, the home side got off to a good start with Andy Spicer taking the first frame 59-32 against Yasin Abbas. Clint I'Anson took the second frame away from Zed Zubair with a break of 40, however Nav Hussain won the next frame beating Kaleem Ashraf 45-35. Peoples Hall made sure of a 2-2 draw with Hussain and Abbas taking a tight frame from I'anson and Ashraf. At Peoples Hall, Shane Kidd got Beeston off to a winning start as he beat last years singles championship finalist Zeb Ahmed. Neil Jones took the second frame with an excellent 49 break. John Marshall pulled one back for Peoples Hall with victory over Chris Hodgkinson but Jones and Kidd sealed the win for Beeston as they beat Ahmed and Marshall in the pairs helped by a run of 33 from Jones.

Arnold's two rival clubs, Civil Defence “A” and Pegasus, battled out a nervy 4-4 draw in the first meeting between the teams this season. At Pegasus, Chris Brooks knocked in a good 42 break in his win against Gary Spencer but Arnold's Jon Fountain levelled with a good win against Jamie Mathers. Fountain made the most of an opening fluked red as he went on to make a telling 36 break. Steve Booth continued his good form with a solid victory against James Notman to put Pegasus back in front before the reliable partnership of Brooks and Mathers sealed a 3-1 home leg win for the Pegasus team. At Arnold, Chris Winter potted several pressure balls as he came from behind against Pegasus's Chris Piech and wrapped up the frame in style with an excellent clearance. Malc Belshaw put the Arnold home leg two nil up with a dominant performance against Mike Langdon but Scott Bates pulled a frame back for Pegasus with a classy performance against James Booth to set up a doubles frame decider. Bates got the nod ahead of Langdon to partner Chris Piech against the Arnold pair of Winter and Belshaw. It was the Pegasus pair who got their noses in front early on but a relatively simple missed red from Bates gave the dangerous Winter an opening from which he made a solid 36 break. As the frame entered the latter stages Bates made up for his earlier miss with a superb long red from which he potted the black and with only one red left on the table headed for the bulk cushion with a good safety shot. Chris Winter could not see all of the potting angle but took on the red regardless hoping a touch of side might just squeeze the red into the pocket...and it did, just not into the pocket he was aiming for! The fluked red signalled the end of Pegasus's hopes of gaining a much needed win as the points were shared.

Stadium Leisure and Arnold Civil Defence “B” were both without a point going into their match and it was Stadium who came out on top with a much needed 5-3 win. At Stadium, it was a very cagey start as Matt Ellis took on Alan Cunningham who played a lot of good safety. Cunningham came through on the colours winning by 20 points. Andy Nichols had a good 28 break on the way to a great win against Stadium captain Pete Gormley. Gormley is yet to win a frame this season and the fact he gave away 16 points in fouls didn't help matters. Clary Plowman kept it very tight against Ken Cunningham in a low scoring frame which Plowman won on the colours. The pairs frame could not have been closer. Gormley and Ellis played Alan Cunningham and Nichols and it was the Arnold pair who potted a respotted black to secure a 3-1 win. At Arnold it was a different story. Kirk Wesselby played some good snooker against Bob Walker but it was Walker who took the frame 61-29. Next up for Stadium was Steve Butler whose attacking approach eventually paid off as he beat Pat McLaughlin 62-15. Danny Di Folco's frame against Pete Ellins was much closer but Di Folco held his nerve to pot frame ball black. Stadium knew that they must win the pairs frame to secure their first win of the season but Di Folco and Walker handled the pressure well as they turned on the style and romped to a 65-12 win over Wesselby and Ellins.

DIVISION 2

Lenton Liberal Club secured their first win of the season as they overcame Oakleigh Lodge 6-2. Lenton’s wins came from Matt Savage v Jason Turner, Adam Goodall v Sean Butler, Roy Hamlin v Jason Butler, Steve Dixon v Ryan Cooper, Jim Wright v Steve Roe and the pairing of Goodall and Savage v Butler and Robinson. Savage made a terrific 42 break in his frame and Wright made an excellent 22 clearance to win by just one point. Oakleigh’s wins came from Paul “Spider” Wilkinson v Melvin Smith and Colin Tutin v Trevor Clarke.

Sherwood Social Club remain unbeaten as they dispatched bottom of the table City Hospital Leisure Centre 6-2. The City Hospital leg finished level as Mick Salton beat Dennis Peet 51-23, Paul Bell beat Russ Kirk 54-49, Rob Wallace beat Les Smith 53-47 and Kirk and Wallace beat Andy Fitton and Salton in the pairs. Sherwood whitewashed their opponents at home though, with Lee Crombie beating Alan Taylor 42-21, Brendan Murtagh victorious over Lee Archer 61-41 and Rob Scarborough hammering Barry Chadwick 70-23. Murtagh and Crombie then beat Taylor and Archer 55-24 in the pairs.
