Stark beats PIOS leader

Barry Stark had a terrific win in round 1 of the EASB Pro-Ticket event 4 at Willie Thorne's, Leicester. He beat the current leader of the Pontin's International Open Series, Kuldesh Johal of Huddersfield 4-2, making breaks of 73 and 57 in the process.

Johal sits at the top of the PIOS rankings thanks to wins in events 2 and 6 of the series. The top 8 ranked players at the end of the series will be promoted to the professional main tour next season.

Stark is now placed 81st in the Pro-Ticket rankings, one place above Mansfield's Andrew Diacopoulos who did not take part in the event. The top 32 ranked players at the end of the season will compete in the Pro-Ticket Play-offs, with the overall winner securing a place on the Professional Main Tour next season.

Hamilton gets another shot at Premier League

Former Pegasus player Anthony Hamilton competed in group 2 of the Championship League on the 27th and 28th February 2008. He was competing along with other top ranked players for a lucrative place in the 2008 Premier League. Despite not playing particularly well, Hamilton managed to finish 2nd in the group which earned him a semi-final place against Ken Doherty.

In the Semi-final, Doherty ran out an easy 3-0 winner and then went on to beat Ali Carter in the final. Doherty joins Ryan Day in the Winners Round in May.

There's still another chance for Hamilton to join Day and Doherty as his 2nd place finish means he will be entered into group 3 of the competition which will be held on 10th May 2008.

Nazareth House Snooker League - Week 19

DIVISION 1

Arnold Civil Defence "A" 4-4 BCI Snooker Centre

Arnold dropped their first league points since their draw with title rivals Pegasus on 30 October last year as they could only manage a draw against third placed BCI Snooker Centre. At BCI, Tony Hart, Malcolm Belshaw and Brian Kinton all won their singles frames. Belshaw and Richard Tooley lost in the doubles but they would have headed back to Arnold thinking they had done enough to secure a seventh straight league win.

Arnold were fielding a strong trio of Gary Spencer, Chris Winter and James Notman at home. Spencer was feeling particularly confident having tasted success at Willie Thorne's, Leicester, at the weekend. He had won the plate competition, organised by Willie's brother Malcolm, enjoying a break of 63 in an early round and knocking out Peoples Hall's Zeb Ahmed in the quarter-final. However, he had no such success in this league encounter as he lost his frame, as did Notman. The in-form Winter knocked in a 45 break on the way to winning his frame which meant he and Spencer had to win the doubles frame for the match. They were never going to have it easy though as they faced former professional Wayne Martin and Kwok Yip. It was the BCI pair who came out on top to secure an excellent draw.

Other results:

Cotgrave Welfare 4-4 Sherwood Social Club "B"
Pegasus Snooker Club P-P Stadium Leisure

DIVISION 2

Arnold Civil Defence "B" 5-3 Wollaton RBL

At Arnold, in the singles, Sean Kelly beat Gordon Gunn 68-16, Stan Candler beat A.Thornhill 72-23, and Andy Nichols beat M.Hind 57-38. In the pairs Kelly & Ellins beat Gordon Gunn & Jack Packer 60-30. Arnold 4-0

At Wollaton, in the Singles Alan Cunningham had a bad night against Rex BENSON losing 55-21. Bill Burton came out tops against Ivan Noon 57-17. Ken Cunningham, half-way through his frame knew that his team had won 4-0 at home, didnt get any run of the ball and despite being 16 in front with the colours on lost to M. Healey 38-43. So, going into the final pairs, Arnold had a lead of 5-2, it was nip and tuck all the way through with the black sitting on the middle bag. Bill Burton, playing with Alan Cunningham, potted the blue putting the Arnold pair 13 in front - but Burton forgot to look at the board and got his sums wrong - and virtually stuck the pink up over the opposite middle bag. Rex Benson, partnered with Adam Winson, stepped forward and sunk the pink and black. The respotted black was potted by Benson, Arnold 1-3. Total Arnold 5-3.

Holt admits to Spider Phobia

Nottingham's Michael Holt has been interviewed over on the World Snooker website where he shares with us his interest in cooking and his disliking of spiders. Whilst one would not argue with his choice of sports team, you would have to question his dubious taste in music!

Nazareth House Snooker League - Week 18

DIVISION 1

Pegasus Snooker Club 5-3 Lenton Liberal Club

Scott Bates was the Pegasus hero as he kept alive his team’s title aspirations by holding his nerve to win an all-important black ball game against Lenton’s Phil Connolly. At Pegasus Chris Brooks added two more high breaks to his haul from last week as the home leg ran out 4-0 winners for the second week running. An excellent 67 break in his singles frame was more than enough to see off Adam Goodall, the win stretches his remarkable 100% record for the season to 16 frames! The reliable Jamie Mathers enjoyed success against Matt Savage whilst Pegasus debutant Kevin Boyes won comfortably in his frame. In the doubles match the in-form Brooks knocked in a 63 break to see off the Lenton pair and wrap up the evening’s play for the dominant home leg in just over an hour.

At Lenton however, the Pegasus team were finding the going tough. Chris Piech looked to have done enough to beat Adam Shaw but a miss on a frame winning brown proved costly. Lenton’s Shaw took control of the frame with some solid safety and some well judged snooker’s and went onto win the frame by sinking Brown, Blue and Pink. Lenton’s Joe Lunney looked in good touch handing out a sixty point drubbing against Mike Langdon who’s form of only one win in 2008 is of a big concern for the team. With Lenton now 2-0 up and Phil Connolly leading Scott Bates in the third frame the alarm bells were ringing loud in the Pegasus camp who can’t afford to drop anymore points this season. However an in-off from Connolly offered Bates a life-line which he grasped potting Yellow, Green, Brown and an awesome long blue along the rail to put himself in the lead and went onto win the frame sinking a pressure black to cheers from his team mates. With the match now won for Pegasus the pairing of Piech and Langdon had hoped to tie the leg but it was to be Lenton’s night as Shaw and Connoly won a scrappy frame to deservedly run out 3-1 leg winners.

More disappointment for Holt

Michael Holt is on his way home from the Welsh Open after suffering defeat to Stephen Hendry 5-1. Holt will now have to wait for the World Championships in April for his next and last chance to gain some ranking points this season.

Frame Scores

Stephen Hendry 5-1 Michael Holt 71-70(70), 45-21, 79(75)-5, 5-92(92), 82(82)-2, 59(47)-21

Hamilton falls at the first hurdle

Former Pegasus professional Anthony Hamilton was sent crashing out of the Welsh Open by Dubliner Michael Judge. Judge made easy work if the Sheriff of Pottingham, winning the match 5-2 and setting up a last 32 encounter with Stephen Lee. Hamilton will now have to hope for a good run at the Crucible to pick up some much needed ranking points and maintain his position in the top 32 of the rankings.

Holt beats Delaney despite scare

Michael Holt defeated Joe Delaney 5-4 in the last 48 of the Welsh Open in Newport, however Delaney almost pulled off an amazing comeback after trailing the hitman by three frames with four to play.

Delaney (pictured) took the first frame but then Holt won four in succession to lead 4-1. Delaney then stunned Holt by winning the next three frames and then going 60 points clear of Holt in the decider. Holt looked dead and buried until he somehow managed to claw his way back into the frame. He then made a gritty 31 break to seal a dramatic win.

It was certainly nailbiting stuff for Holt and his legion of fans but he can now look forward to a last 32 clash with seven times world champion Stephen Hendry.

Holt and Hamilton need to perform

The Welsh Open starts tomorrow and the tournament will provide a much needed opportunity for Nottingham's Michael Holt (pictured) and Anthony Hamilton to score some ranking points. Both players have been on the slide this season, Holt is down to 35th from 24th at the start of the campaign. Hamilton started in 26th and has slid to 31st position.

Whether either player can handle the pressure as they run out of ranking tournaments is anyone's guess. Both players were knocked out of the China Open last month and that just leaves this tournament and the World Championship in which to score some points and improve their ranking positions.

One thing's for sure, everyone in Nottingham wishes them luck!

Order of play:

7pm - Michael Holt v Joe Delaney
7pm - Anthony Hamilton v Andrew Higginson

Nazareth House Snooker League - Week 17

DIVISION 1

Pegasus Snooker Club 6-2 Cotgrave Welfare

Pegasus kept up the pressure on table toppers Arnold Civil Defence ‘A’ with a good 6-2 win over Cotgrave Welfare. At Pegasus the home leg recorded their sixth four nil victory of the season to lay the foundations of the win. Jamie Mathers and Scott Bates both won their matches comfortably but it was the Pegasus talisman Chris Brooks who really shone for the team. Brooks won his frame by over a hundred points knocking in a 55 break in the process, this was to be his first of four 50+ breaks of the evening with a 69 and two 58 breaks coming later in his 3-1 NHSL singles quarter-final victory over Arnold’s Gary Spencer. A good doubles partnership appears to be forming between Chris Brooks and Jamie Mathers who had no problems in the final frame of the evening.

It was a late finish at Cotgrave where several long tactical frames resulted in the last ball being potted at about 10:45pm! Cotgrave won the first frame when Anthony McMahan gained some revenge over Chris Piech winning on the pink after yet another hour-long epic between the two players. Steve Booth had to endure an incredible comeback from John Cyrek before winning his frame. Booth who was leading by some 54 points with only two reds left on the table eventually won with a foul on the pink, Cyrek had amazingly managed to get five snookers and two free balls to pull himself back into the frame before the unfortunate in-off. It was Mike Langdon and Steve Richards who played out the longest match of the evening, a whopping hour and twenty minutes tactical frame, which Cotgrave’s Richards eventually won on the brown. With Pegasus needing every frame they can get to reduce Arnold’s superior frame difference it was imperative that the partnership of Piech and Langdon won the final frame of the evening against Richards and McMahan. The Cotgrave pair got the two snookers they required to pull themselves back into contention only to see Chris Piech knock in a miracle brown down the side cushion to win the frame for Pegasus and tie the leg.

Stadium Leisure 6-2 Lenton Liberal Club "A"

At Stadium, Barry Stark played Matt Savage. Stark got off to a slow start but then, with the aid of a 48 break, he won the frame 67-30. Ross Wilkin fought out a tight frame against Adam Goodall and it was a fluke on the pink that won it for Wilkin 49-40. Coincidentally Lenton's Darren Hewitt also fluked a pink to win his frame against the unlucky Mark Bradley (who has only won 3 frames all season) 68-51. In the pairs Stark & Wilkin took on Savage & Goodall and after some solid support from Wilkin, Stark showed his class by making a 47 break to ensure a 60-16 victory. Frame Score: 3-1 to Stadium.

At Lenton, Phil Connoly played Steve Butler and it was Connoly who started the better only for Butler to reply with a run of 32. Connoly found himself 26 behind with 27 on the table and he almost cleared the colours but he needed the extension for the black and this caused him to miss. Butler eventually potted the black for a 63-55 win. Joe Lunney proved too strong for Pete Gormley, making a 34 break and restricting Gormley to just two reds as he ran out a 59-2 winner. Matt Ellis fought hard and played some excellent safety play as he beat Lawrence Richards 55-39. In the pairs Ellis again played some excellent snooker alongside Butler and they won fairly convincingly against Lunney & Connoly 62-24. Frame Score: 3-1 to Stadium.

Arnold Civil Defence "A" 6-2 Sherwood Social Club "B"

At Sherwood, Tony Hart and Malc Belshaw won their singles but Brian Kinton lost. In the doubles Belshaw & Kinton beat the home pair.

At Arnold, wins for Chris Winter (51 break), Gary Spencer and John Fountain in the singles but Winter & Notman managed to lose the pairs on the blue and pink.

DIVISION 2

Mapperley Community Centre 5-3 Arnold Civil Defence "B"

At Mapperley, Alan Cunningham, Bill Burton and Ken Cunningham all lost their singles frames. Alan Cunningham played what he described as "a stupid safety off the final black" and managed to stick it up over the middle bag. In the doubles frame, Alan Cunningham & Burton never got into it and were beaten easily.

At Arnold, Sean Kelly beat Don Merry 64-15, Stan Candler beat Chris Star 49-34 and Andy Nichols beat Chris Wright 53-51 when Wright went in-off the black. The away team got back just as the pairs frame was starting at Arnold. Kelly & Pete Ellins played Star & Merry with the Arnold pair knowing they needed a win to tie the match. It was neck and neck as Merry put the visitors in the driving seat with a good 29 break leaving the black over the corner bag. With one red left it was still nip and tuck as Kelly, with a chance to clear and win the frame, took the red with the blue followed by yellow, green, brown and blue but then rattled the pink. Star eventually potted the pink giving Mapperley the frame and the match.

Highest Breaks

Standards in the league have really improved over the last couple of seasons as can be seen by the number of 50+ breaks we are now seeing. So far this season there have been 22 breaks over 50 and this week's break of 69 by Chris Brooks is the highest of the season so far. Lenton's Adam Shaw, a player who is improving week after week, made an amazing 138 break in practise this week!

Nazareth House Snooker League - Week 16

DIVISION 1

Pegasus Snooker Club 7-1 BCI Snooker Centre

Pegasus responded from their recent disappointments in a spirited and positive manner, an emphatic 7-1 victory over third placed BCI Snooker Centre. At Pegasus Chris Brooks knocked in a 38 break as he enjoyed his second victory this season against former professional Wayne Martin. Jamie Mathers who is playing some great snooker at the moment knocked in a 78 break in the pre-match warm up and proved to be too strong for BCI’s Jonathan Mason. Kwok Yip responded for BCI with a comfortable win over Steve Booth but this was to be their only success of the match. Jamie Mathers and Chris Brooks won comfortably in the pairs helped in large to an excellent 50 break from Brooks to give the home leg a 3-1 win.

Bulwell Church Institute has not been a happy hunting ground in the past for the Pegasus away leg (those pesky tight pockets!), but all three players put in solid performances. Chris Piech won comfortably against Neil Elliott helped by a 27 break whilst a 21 break from Scott Bates along with some good safety ensured victory over BCI’s Shaun Parkinson. Mike Langdon having lost his previous three matches had a welcome win against Steve Coleman. A timely 23 break put him ahead going into the colours and an excellent long yellow left Coleman at the snooker’s required stage, which proved to be enough. The doubles frame had an exciting finish with BCI’s Steve Coleman sinking Pink and Black to force a re-spot. The Pegasus pairing of Piech and Langdon won the all-important toss and elected BCI to play the first shot. Coleman who hadn’t enjoyed the best of luck all evening got a horrible double kiss to gift Langdon a simple pot and give the Pegasus away leg an impressive four nil victory.

Lenton Liberal Club "A" 5-3 Cotgrave Welfare

A return to form saw Lenton run out 4 - 0 winners at home with wins for Adam Shaw, Joe Lunney, and Phil Connoly in the singles, and through Lunney and Connoly in the pairs.

However, Lenton's away team didn't find the running as easy at Cotgrave. With the abscence of Matt Savage on holiday, the only leg Lenton won was through Adam Goodall (30 break) in his singles frame, with Daz Hewitt and James Wood losing their respective singles legs, and Goodall and Hewitt losing in the pairs.

Stadium Leisure 4-4 Sherwood Social Club "B"

At Sherwood, Steve Butler produced an array of good pots and sound safety play to take the first frame 41-21. Sherwood newcomer Lee Mayer demolished Stadium captain Pete Gormley who produced his worst frame of the season going down 61-9. Mark Bradley then played Sherwood captain Mick Salton in a frame with lots of missed chances. Bradley hammered the final pink only to leave it for a grateful Salton to steal the frame 57-45. In the doubles Evans & Mayer beat Bradley & Gormley on a respotted black. Bradley potted the pink for the frame only for the white to go in-off. Mayer then potted the pink but Gormley mesmerised the crowd with an exquisite black to level the frame. Bradley missed a difficult chance on the black and Mayer sunk it for the win.

At Stadium Barry Stark knocked in a 22 and a 31 break to secure an easy victory. Ross Wilkin lost on the pink against Paul Bell in a frame dominated by snookers. Matt Ellis beat Les Smith comfortably. In the doubles Stark & Wilkin won a close frame against Bell & Andy Fitton.

DIVISION 2

Arnold Civil Defence "B" 4-4 Oakleigh Lodge Social Club

At Arnold, with agreement of both captains, the teams elected to play 4 singles frames. Arnold got off to a good start with wins for Sean Kelly, Bill Burton and Ken Cunningham, however Pete Ellins lost his 100% record.

At Oakleigh it was a different story. Oakleigh's young starlet Jason McKenna had a run of 32 against Alan Cunningham, however Cunningham clawed his way back with the help of a lucky double in an 18 break. McKenna was snookered on the last red but fluked it in the middle bag followed by the blue. With 25 points on the table Cunningham was 24 behind and he potted the green, brown and blue but jawed the pink which McKenna potted to win the frame 63-45. Stan Candler playing Steve Rowe had a bad night, managing to pot just 3 reds and when he went-in-off the penultimate red he conceded 3-53. Andy Nichols had a dogged frame against Rob Selby but he double kissed the pink and pushed it over the top corner bag with the black on its spot and this allowed Selby to pot them both for a 53-47 win. In the pairs Cunningham & Candler took on McKenna & Selby. The Arnold pair were cruising 30 odd points in front but Cunningham played a loose safety and went in-off. McKenna then made a 22 break to put the Oakleigh pair back in it. Cunningham & Candler managed to stay in front until the final blue which Cunningham potted but ran in-off to the centre trying to get position on the pink. Cunningham eventually did pot the blue and played the pink round the table leaving it about a foot from the top pocket. McKenna went for it, rattled the jaws and it shot across to other corner and rattled and back across to its original pocket, sticking on the lip. Candler stepped forward and took pink and black for the frame 63-53.
