Lee Spick's hopes scuppered by Thai-phoon

Mansfield's Lee Spick's hopes of qualifying for the final stages of the £200k Northern Ireland Trophy next month were dashed when he was knocked out by Thai-phoon James Wattana.

Spick had already beaten Liu Chuang (world ranked 90th) 5-4 in round 1 and Paul Davies (world ranked 56th) 5-3 in round 2. However Wattana (world ranked 64th) proved just too strong, beating Spick 5-2. Spick started well making a 78 break in the first frame but he soon found himself 3-1 down and despite pulling it back to 3-2, Wattana wrapped it up winning the next two frames.

Spick is currently sitting in 82nd place in the rankings and faces losing his professional status unless he can start putting a run together soon.

FRAME SCORES

James Wattana 5-2 Lee Spick 12-118(78), 61-33, 70-59, 83(83)-0, 23-87, 68-56, 80(38,42)-0

Hamilton & Holt cannot progress beyond group stages

Anthony Hamilton and Michael Holt were both placed into the same group in Aberdeen for the Royal London Watches Grand Prix. It was always going to be tough with the likes of Graeme Dott and Ali Carter in the group, however it was world number 42 Marcus Campbell who proved to be the surprise package. The Dumbarton player turned pro in 1991 but has had little success during his career. In fact, his only real claim to fame was his performance against Stephen Hendry back in the 1998 UK Championship when he whitewashed him 9-0.

Carter and Campbell finished in the top two places securing qualification for the last 16 stage, with Holt finishing 3rd and Hamilton 4th. Amazaingly, former world champion Dott failed to win a match and finished bottom of the group.
