NOTTINGHAM 6 RED SUPER LEAGUE
MATCHES PLAYED 30 JUNE 2009DIVISION 1The highlight of this week’s fixtures was the derby between Beeston Titans and Beeston Vikings. The Titans were looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat and Clint I'Anson got the match off to a great start by beating Chris Hodgkinson 2-0. “That win should help my confidence” said I’Anson after the match. The second game was between Neil Jones and the in-form Tom Walters. Jones started well with a 24 break and looked odds on to win the frame until he missed a chance with the last red on the table. Walters punished the miss, going on to clear up with great 34 break. Jones also started well in the second frame but Walters crawled his way back into contention. Both players missed simple chances on the pink but it was Walters who potted pink and black to level the match at 2-2. The final game was between Ant “on the money” McMahon and Shane Kidd. McMahon knew how important this game was with Walters holding the highest break and the Titans man played some solid snooker to win both frames and also the match 4-3.
Pegasus Predators made it back to back wins with a narrow victory over the BCI Bandits. Recent signing Zeb Ahmed remains unbeaten for the Predators after a good 2-0 win over Steve Coleman. The opening frame was a tight tactical encounter with Coleman laying some great snookers and was unfortunate to end up losing the frame after a bit of lady luck helped Ahmed to wrestle control of the frame. There was nothing fortunate about the second frame with Ahmed hitting his stride knocking in a 22 break in a 43 points with no reply victory. On the other table Bandits captain Wayne Martin ensured the match was all level going into the final pairing with a good, but scrappy 2-0 win over Danny Castel-Nuovo. Nav Hussain got off to a flyer in the final game against Bandits’ Jason Bettridge by raising the high break target to 35 and putting the Predators 3-2 up. Bettridge responded well in the final frame and very nearly snatched the break point away from the Predators but a missed pink on 32 was enough to take the frame but not the match as the Predators ran out 4-3 winners.
Stadium Sharks continued their good form with a 4-3 home win against Arnold Aces. Barry Stark got off to a good start in the first frame against James Notman with a 24 break, but Notman fought back with an 18 break and looked the favourite. Stark eventually potted a tough black to win the frame by one point and put the Sharks 1-0 ahead. In the second frame Notman raised his game, making a 16 break on the way to a 51-13 victory. Daniel Di Folco defeated Kirk Wesselby 2-0 in the next game. The first frame was very close but the Sharks player finished well to take it 39-34. In the second frame Wesselby was extremely unlucky, going in-off no less than three times and Di Folco punished him, winning the frame 37-14. In the final game John Fountain faced an easy pot on the pink to take the first frame but he missed it and Steve Butler potted pink and black to pinch it 33-25. With just one frame remaining it was looking good for the Sharks as they were 4-1 ahead and on course to secure the break point thanks to Stark's run of 24 in the opening frame of the match. However, Butler played a poor attempt at the first red which left Fountain in the balls and the Aces player made a terrific five red, four black and one pink break of 39 which left Butler needing a snooker. A shell-shocked Butler conceded with all the colours remaining.
DIVISION 2Oakleigh Lodge Social Club saw its two teams go head to head in a good quality encounter that was so close it took the third highest break to decide the winner! Under the rules, if two players from opposing teams make the same high break, then the break point is awarded to the team making the second highest break. In this match, Spider and Adam Robinson both made 15 breaks and the second highest break of 13 made by Steve Roe was equalled again by Robinson. Spider's break of 12 therefore secured the all important break point which gave the Miss Fits a 4-3 win over the Daft Lads, lifting them up to fifth in the table.
Stadium Steelers went into their match with Phoenix Falcons fielding just two players, with several players missing through either illness or holiday. As such they made the decision to play and accept the two penalty points. Matt Ellis and Steve Howard played out a 1-1 draw. Ellis took the first frame which was very scrappy with a high break of 11 having failed to pot the black for an 18 clearance. Ellis never got going in the second frame and a good 19 break helped Howard on to an easy win. The second game was between Dave Allsopp and Clary Plowman. The Steelers player was playing his first match of the summer and he looked like he had never been away, easing ahead and ensuring Allsopp needed snookers going into the colours. The referee, who shall remain nameless, then whilst trying to work out whether there was a free ball, randomly picked up the white ball off the other table where Howard had just broken off in his second frame against Ellis! After everybody had finished laughing Plowman regained his composure to secure the frame. Allsopp then won a low scoring second frame to level the match at 2-2. Ellis and Plowman then had to play an additional frame each against Ant Adkin-Walker. In the first frame, Adkin-Walker tried his best to put Ellis off, coating his hands in talc before the frame and then proceeding to put it all over the table with huge hand marks everywhere! Ellis managed to take the last two reds after a slow start and went on to clear yellow to pink for a 30 break, which was enough to seal the break point for the Steelers. In the final frame Plowman found his form again making it difficult for the Falcons man. Adkin-Walker went in-off after potting the blue leaving Plowman in prime position. The Steelers player then potted an awesome blue and pink to seal the frame and secure a 5-2 victory for the Steelers.
BCI Braves whitewashed Pegasus Colts with 2-0 wins for Dave Salmon against Eric Towle, Mick Salmon against Steve Booth and Toby Irons against Chris Mathers. Dave Salmon took the break point with a run of 15.
Beeston Warriors were just pipped 3-4 at home by BCI Breakers. Steve Cheung made the highest break of 18 in a 1-1 draw against Sean Croft. Shaun Harlow lost 0-2 to Shaun Parkinson and Lee Harlow drew 1-1 against Jordan Parnham.
