Bulwell & District Snooker League

Matches played 6 July 2009

DIVISION 1

BCI 'E' are starting to pull away at the top of the table with a 4-1 home win over second placed Ruddington CC. Kwok Yip, who is top of the ranking list, took the first frame over Nick Kirkman by 59-38. Jon "sober" Mason had a good 68-23 win against Dave Griffiths and Paul Bell took the third frame over Dennis Dyer by 61-45. Morris Hudspeth then pulled a frame back for Ruddington CC with a 71-41 win over an unlucky Hanson Stowe. This leaves BCI 'E' 8 points clear at the top.

BCI 'B' had their second win of the campaign with a good close win over their 'C' team rivals. Neil Elliott had a close 50-42 win over Steve Capsey (Senior) in the first frame. An even closer 44-43 win by Toby Irons over Shaun Parkinson was the result in the second frame. Mick Salmon had a massive 82-29 win over Steve Capsey (Junior) to take the third frame. It was left to young Connor Kelliher to get a consolation point for BCI 'C' with a 56-34 win against Ian Dawson.

The match between Spot On (Sneinton) and City Hospital LC was postponed due to holidays.

DIVISION 2

Mapperley CC go joint top of the division after a 4-1 win away at Masters SC. Chris Wright for Mapperley CC took a close first frame over James Booth by 59-47. An out of form captain James Robinson lost 55-30 against Mapperley CC captain Don Merry. In a frame he shouldn't have lost Bob Wright, leading by 18 with 3 balls left, lost 46-40 against Andy Carnell of Mapperley. In an hour long encounter the fourth frame was won by Paul Bell, for Masters SC over A.Wright. With 4 reds left the score was 13-10 to Bell. Bell finally winning 56-32.

BCI 'D stay in joint top position despite going down 3-2 at Phoenix Cue Sports. Clint Broome took the last 3 colours to win the first frame 63-46 over Steve Howard. Dave Allsopp won the frame, and his team the match, with a 66-29 win against Stuart Bradley

McMahon on the money in Beeston derby

NOTTINGHAM 6 RED SUPER LEAGUE

MATCHES PLAYED 30 JUNE 2009

DIVISION 1

The highlight of this week’s fixtures was the derby between Beeston Titans and Beeston Vikings. The Titans were looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat and Clint I'Anson got the match off to a great start by beating Chris Hodgkinson 2-0. “That win should help my confidence” said I’Anson after the match. The second game was between Neil Jones and the in-form Tom Walters. Jones started well with a 24 break and looked odds on to win the frame until he missed a chance with the last red on the table. Walters punished the miss, going on to clear up with great 34 break. Jones also started well in the second frame but Walters crawled his way back into contention. Both players missed simple chances on the pink but it was Walters who potted pink and black to level the match at 2-2. The final game was between Ant “on the money” McMahon and Shane Kidd. McMahon knew how important this game was with Walters holding the highest break and the Titans man played some solid snooker to win both frames and also the match 4-3.

Pegasus Predators made it back to back wins with a narrow victory over the BCI Bandits. Recent signing Zeb Ahmed remains unbeaten for the Predators after a good 2-0 win over Steve Coleman. The opening frame was a tight tactical encounter with Coleman laying some great snookers and was unfortunate to end up losing the frame after a bit of lady luck helped Ahmed to wrestle control of the frame. There was nothing fortunate about the second frame with Ahmed hitting his stride knocking in a 22 break in a 43 points with no reply victory. On the other table Bandits captain Wayne Martin ensured the match was all level going into the final pairing with a good, but scrappy 2-0 win over Danny Castel-Nuovo. Nav Hussain got off to a flyer in the final game against Bandits’ Jason Bettridge by raising the high break target to 35 and putting the Predators 3-2 up. Bettridge responded well in the final frame and very nearly snatched the break point away from the Predators but a missed pink on 32 was enough to take the frame but not the match as the Predators ran out 4-3 winners.

Stadium Sharks continued their good form with a 4-3 home win against Arnold Aces. Barry Stark got off to a good start in the first frame against James Notman with a 24 break, but Notman fought back with an 18 break and looked the favourite. Stark eventually potted a tough black to win the frame by one point and put the Sharks 1-0 ahead. In the second frame Notman raised his game, making a 16 break on the way to a 51-13 victory. Daniel Di Folco defeated Kirk Wesselby 2-0 in the next game. The first frame was very close but the Sharks player finished well to take it 39-34. In the second frame Wesselby was extremely unlucky, going in-off no less than three times and Di Folco punished him, winning the frame 37-14. In the final game John Fountain faced an easy pot on the pink to take the first frame but he missed it and Steve Butler potted pink and black to pinch it 33-25. With just one frame remaining it was looking good for the Sharks as they were 4-1 ahead and on course to secure the break point thanks to Stark's run of 24 in the opening frame of the match. However, Butler played a poor attempt at the first red which left Fountain in the balls and the Aces player made a terrific five red, four black and one pink break of 39 which left Butler needing a snooker. A shell-shocked Butler conceded with all the colours remaining.

DIVISION 2

Oakleigh Lodge Social Club saw its two teams go head to head in a good quality encounter that was so close it took the third highest break to decide the winner! Under the rules, if two players from opposing teams make the same high break, then the break point is awarded to the team making the second highest break. In this match, Spider and Adam Robinson both made 15 breaks and the second highest break of 13 made by Steve Roe was equalled again by Robinson. Spider's break of 12 therefore secured the all important break point which gave the Miss Fits a 4-3 win over the Daft Lads, lifting them up to fifth in the table.

Stadium Steelers went into their match with Phoenix Falcons fielding just two players, with several players missing through either illness or holiday. As such they made the decision to play and accept the two penalty points. Matt Ellis and Steve Howard played out a 1-1 draw. Ellis took the first frame which was very scrappy with a high break of 11 having failed to pot the black for an 18 clearance. Ellis never got going in the second frame and a good 19 break helped Howard on to an easy win. The second game was between Dave Allsopp and Clary Plowman. The Steelers player was playing his first match of the summer and he looked like he had never been away, easing ahead and ensuring Allsopp needed snookers going into the colours. The referee, who shall remain nameless, then whilst trying to work out whether there was a free ball, randomly picked up the white ball off the other table where Howard had just broken off in his second frame against Ellis! After everybody had finished laughing Plowman regained his composure to secure the frame. Allsopp then won a low scoring second frame to level the match at 2-2. Ellis and Plowman then had to play an additional frame each against Ant Adkin-Walker. In the first frame, Adkin-Walker tried his best to put Ellis off, coating his hands in talc before the frame and then proceeding to put it all over the table with huge hand marks everywhere! Ellis managed to take the last two reds after a slow start and went on to clear yellow to pink for a 30 break, which was enough to seal the break point for the Steelers. In the final frame Plowman found his form again making it difficult for the Falcons man. Adkin-Walker went in-off after potting the blue leaving Plowman in prime position. The Steelers player then potted an awesome blue and pink to seal the frame and secure a 5-2 victory for the Steelers.

BCI Braves whitewashed Pegasus Colts with 2-0 wins for Dave Salmon against Eric Towle, Mick Salmon against Steve Booth and Toby Irons against Chris Mathers. Dave Salmon took the break point with a run of 15.

Beeston Warriors were just pipped 3-4 at home by BCI Breakers. Steve Cheung made the highest break of 18 in a 1-1 draw against Sean Croft. Shaun Harlow lost 0-2 to Shaun Parkinson and Lee Harlow drew 1-1 against Jordan Parnham.

Pegasus Snooker League update

Pegasus Snooker League News

Unstoppable Hussain Powers On

Division One

Nav Hussain continues to dominate proceedings at the top of Division One with six straight victories whilst all the other competitors continue to take points of each other. Hussain won his 6th match of the season with an impressive 3-1 victory over Gary Spencer to move 6 points clear at the top ahead of his nearest rival Chris Winter. However, Winter does have a game in hand, and perhaps showed a glimpse of what is to come in the second half of the season with a fine 3-1 victory over Danny Castel-Nuovo which included two 41 breaks and the season's highest break to date a superb 62. James Notman is enjoying a good season and is the only other player apart from Hussain to stay unbeaten. He managed to come back from two frames down to grab a draw against Chris Winter and also picked up draws against Gary Spencer and Danny Castel-Nuovo as well as beating Mike Langdon. The defeat by Notman was Mike Langdon's third in as many games as he slumped towards the bottom of the table before a moral boosting victory over Andy Orange.

Booth Sends Wilkin Crashing

Division Two

Steve Booth inflicted Ross Wilkin's first defeat of the season to go top of division Two with an excellent 3-1 victory. Booth raced into a 3-0 lead before Wilkin showed what he is capable of with a good 30 break to win a consolation frame. Sadly Division Two has had a few problems this season with the loss of two players early on to reduce the division to just 5 players. Scott Bates withdrew due to other commitments whilst Chris Porter has moved back to Wales. Hopefully we can now kick on with the season which has so far been very frustrating for all the players involved, some of which have had results scratched due to the withdrawal of said players.

So Far So Good For Knowles

Division Three

Danny Knowles leads the third Division by 2 points after a 3-1 victory over an out of form Chris Mathers who currently sits bottom of the league after a miserable run of results. Knowles also managed a 2-2 draw with his nearest rival Luke Robinson and has beaten Brian Steeples, Ian Westby and Dan Hallam on route to the top of the table. Pre season favourite Robinson, who has so far not really got going, needs to start turning draws into wins if he is going to overturn Knowles at the top. Matt Parr and Ian Westby played out a 2-2 draw and both players will be pleased with solid starts to the season and are placed 3rd and 4th respectively. At the bottom end of the table a run of three straight draws has lifted Dan Hallam from the bottom to 5th place...the latest coming against his Grandad, Brian Steeples. All in all it's been an exciting start to the season with 4 players still in contention for the title.

Langdon Holds Nerve To Win Cup Thriller

Knock-out Cup

Mike Langdon caused a huge upset with a dramatic 3-2 victory against Chris Winter to book his place in the third round. At two nil down an out of form Winter had looked likely to be whitewashed when trailing by some 58 points with only two reds remaining in the third frame but showed great character and skill to turn the frame around with the help of a couple of free balls and a classy clearance of the colours to give himself an unlikely life-line. Winter then won the fourth frame to level the match and set up a final frame decider. Langdon built up an early 30 point lead and this time around made no mistake, running out a 60 odd point shock winner. There was very nearly another upset in the match between Brian Steeples of the third division and Andy Orange who had to come from behind twice. In a late finish Orange finally killed off the match by sinking pink and black to a standing ovation from the gallery of three spectators and the barman. A rejuvenated Ian Westby saw off Daniel Norton 3-1 whilst Eric Towle enjoyed an excellent 3-0 victory over Luke Robinson. Last season's semi finalist Nav Hussain, is also safely though to the third round after beating James Booth 3-1.

Other news

The ranking table has been updated to include all points accumulated in June. James Notman is the biggest mover up from 19th place to 11th whilst Mike Langdon’s cup win has just kept him in second place ahead of Gary Spencer in third. Pegasus Snooker League champion Nav Hussain remains the number 1 player with a comfortable lead. The draws for the 3rd round of the KO cup and 1st round of the Members cup will be made next Thursday.

Nottingham 6 Red Super League: Daddies tame the Titans

NOTTINGHAM 6 RED SUPER LEAGUE

MATCHES PLAYED 23 JUNE 2009

DIVISION 1

Sherwood Daddies came out on top with a 4-3 defeat of Beeston Titans. Clint I'Anson, who has been struggling with his form this season, came up against last minute replacement and three times Notts Amateur Champion Bash Maqsood. In the first frame I'Anson never really got going and Maqsood won the frame quite easily. In the second frame Maqsood left I'Anson a half chance with a long red which rattled in the jaws of the pocket and left Maqsood in to make a cracking clearance of 56. Next game up was Lee Crombie vs Neil Jones and the Titans man got off to a great start and finished the game out with a 30 break. The second frame was a bit of safety exchange between both players until Jones managed to catch the middle knuckle with the white which sent it back down towards the group of reds. Crombie did not waste any time and knocked in a superb 53 break with the blue, pink and black still left on the table. In the final game Wayne Bilbie took on Ant McMahon. The Titans’ in-form player started the better of the two in the first frame and took it by 20+ points. In the second frame Bilbie played a loose safety shot and went in-off in the middle pocket. McMahon then stepped up and made a great break of 53 which would have been 60 had the black not rattled in the jaws.

BCI Giants were thankful for their first break point of the season which gave them a 4-3 win against Arnold Aces. John Fountain got off to a good start against Jonathan Mason but it was the Giants player who converted some good long pots to clear up with a break of 26. Frame two was more open with both players having chances but Fountain displayed great skill to take it for the Aces. The second game between James Booth and Neil Elliott was an explosive one with both players choosing an attacking style. Elliott got off to a better start opening up a good lead but Booth came back well with some great potting. Elliott just needed the brown but he missed and it was Booth who finished well to take the first frame. Booth got off to the better start in frame two but it was Elliott with some fantastic potting who took it to level the match at 2-2. The final game was between James Notman and Kwok Yip and it was the Giants captain who made the better start with some clean crisp long potting. Notman came back into the game well with some good potting of his own and he went on to take the frame to put the Aces 3-2 ahead. Yip was very quick off the mark in the final frame but Notman responded well with some great potting, setting himself up with a chance to win but he missed the brown and Yip pinched it. Mason’s run of 26 gave the Giants that all important break point.

Pegasus Predators narrowed the gap at the top of the division with a fine 5-2 away victory at Beeston Vikings. Danny Castel-Nuovo won a scrappy opening frame for the Predators before Shane Kidd got the Vikings back in the match with an excellent 33 break which secured the break point. From then on in it was all one way traffic with Zeb Ahmed in good touch on his debut for the Predators easing to a 2-0 win over Chris Hodgkinson. Nav Hussain then secured the victory with an excellent 2-0 defeat of Tom Walters.

DIVISION 2

BCI Breakers had a very impressive 7-0 win against Phoenix Falcons. Sean Croft beat Ash Goring 2-0, Shaun Parkinson beat Gary Birks 2-0 and Jordan Parnham beat Stephen Lally 2-0. Parkinson secured the break point for the Breakers with a fine run of 27.

Beeston Warriors kept up their terrific away form with a 5-2 victory over Oakleigh Miss Fits. Chung Cheung drew 1-1 with Steve Roe and Shaun Harlow also drew 1-1 with Rob Selby. Lee Harlow then inflicted a rare 2-0 defeat on Spider. Shaun Harlow took the break point for the Warriors with a knock of 19.

Pegasus Colts defeated Oakleigh Daft Lads 5-2 and it was Steve Booth who shone yet again for the Colts with a 2-0 defeat of Adam Robinson including a run of 28 which also secured the break point for his team. Eric Towle and Daniel Norton both drew 1-1 against Ryan Cooper and Colin Tutin respectively.

Stadium Steelers maintained the pressure on the top two with a fine 4-3 victory against top-of-the-table BCI Braves. Matt Ellis lost the first frame against Dave Salmon, the Braves player having a run of 22 which secured the break point. Ellis got his own back in the second to level the match with a nice 16 break. Ross Wilkin was very lucky to take the first frame against Mick Salmon who made some unexpected errors to gift the frame to the Steelers player. Wilkin relaxed in the second frame and made some good pots to take the frame. In the final game Toby Irons made some great long pots to take the first frame against Dave Buckley, but the Steelers player stretched out a nice lead in the final frame, which despite some great safety from Irons, was enough to win it comfortably.

Steve Capsey (Junior) got the point for the 'C' team, but could only beat Paul Bell 66-63, thus giving the extra point to the 'E' team. Ruddington CC move up to second place moving above their opponents City Hospital LC. Chris Clark's new cue was in sparkling form for City Hospital winning the first frame 71-16 against Morris Hudspeth. It was all Ruddington from then on. Nottingham 6 Red Super League: Titans go clear of Sharks

NOTTINGHAM 6 RED SUPER LEAGUE

MATCHES PLAYED 16 JUNE 2009

DIVISION 1

Beeston Titans went four points clear of Stadium Sharks at the top of division one thanks to a 5-2 win against joint bottom Arnold Aces. James Booth got the Aces off to a flyer with an excellent 2-0 victory over Clint I'Anson. Neil Jones then levelled the match with a 2-0 win against Aces captain James Notman. The impressive Ant McMahon, who hasn't dropped a frame since the opening day, defeated Kirk Wesselby 2-0 in the final game, also securing the all important break point with a run of 31.

Stadium Sharks narrowly defeated Pegasus Predators 4-3 in a closely fought match that saw Nav Hussain capture the break point for the Predators with a clearance of 35. Hussain's break came in the opening frame of his game against Barry Stark. Hussain was potting everything in sight and he hammered Stark 61-0. The Sharks player, who was standing in for the absent Bob Walker, then hit back in style, levelling the match with a 40-17 victory. Daniel Di Folco put the Sharks ahead with a 35-25 win against Danny Castel-Nuovo but the Predators man levelled the match again with a 31-23 win in the second frame. Neither Steve Butler or Mike Langdon had been playing well recently so it was anybody's guess who would come out on top in the final game of the match. The first frame was a tactical battle but Butler finished the frame strongly, taking it 41-14 to put the Sharks 3-2 ahead. With little prospect of Butler beating Hussain's 35 break the match was effectively 3-3 going into the crucial final frame. Butler found himself 24 points ahead after making breaks of 13 and 15. He gave Langdon few chances but it was the Predators captain's bad luck that led to him losing the frame. Langdon had a good chance to clear the colours but in potting the brown he stunned the white into the middle bag, leaving Butler an easy pot on the brown from the D which put him 19 ahead with 18 remaining. Langdon potted the blue but then went in-off the pink into the same middle bag and Butler dispatched the pink to win the match for the Sharks.

DIVISION 2

BCI Braves came out on top in the local derby with BCI Breakers. The Braves won 5-2 but the match was much closer than the score line suggests with most frames going down to the wire. Dave Salmon secured three points for the Braves by beating Shaun Parkinson 2-0 and making the highest break of 17. Mick Salmon drew 1-1 with Jordan Parnham and Toby Irons also drew 1-1 with Sean Croft.

Oakleigh Miss Fits had a terrific 5-2 win against Pegasus Colts. Steve Roe defeated Scott Bates 2-0 with frame scores of 31-18 and 36-24. Rob Selby lost his first frame against Danny Knowles 15-45 but he made up for it in the second with a 42-9 win. Spider comprehensively defeated Eric Towle 2-0 with frame scores of 40-27 and 49-8 but Towle secured the break point for the Colts with a run of 18.

Stadium Steelers ran out comfortable 6-1 winners against Oakleigh Daft Lads and but for an in-off on the final black in the final frame they would have completed a whitewash. Dave Buckley, standing in for Ross Wilkin, got the Steelers off to a good start with some solid potting against Colin Tutin to take the first frame. Buckley then sneaked a very close second frame to put the Steelers 2-0 up. Ryan Cooper then had some awful luck against Pete Gormley, who is the Steelers’ in-form player, as Gormley won both frames to put the Steelers 4-0 ahead. In the final game, Matt Ellis secured the break point for the Steelers with a run of 15. His opponent Adam Robinson left him a simple pink in the first frame which he duly dispatched to make it 6-0. Ellis slipped up in the final frame, missing a few crucial pots and Robinson took advantage to go ahead. Ellis needed blue, pink and black to win and he potted blue and pink to take it to the black ball. Robinson then left the black near the middle pocket and Ellis had a simple straight shot for 7-0 but he potted the black and then watched agonisingly the white followed it in, handing the frame to Robinson.

Phoenix Falcons went down 2-5 at home to Beeston Warriors. Things started ok for the Falcons as Joe Trout drew 1-1 with Lee Harlow and Dave Allsopp drew 1-1 with Shaun Harlow. The Warriors then took all of the remaining points on offer thanks to Andy Hopcroft who defeated Stephen Lally 2-0 and secured the break point with a fine knock of 25.
